Watch David Byrne Cover Biz Markie's "Just a Friend"

Watch David Byrne Cover Biz Markie's "Just a Friend"

Last night in New York, David Byrne was among a group of artists to perform at Le Poisson Rouge for a concert and rally organized by Content Creators Coalition-NYC. The goal was to raise awareness of and support for a terrestrial radio performance royalty—in the U.S., only the composers of songs get radio royalties, not the performers. (For example, Whitney Houston never got a royalty every time her cover of "I Will Always Love You" was played on the radio.) The organizers of the event are demanding Congressional action to change this.

To shine light on this issue, at last night's event, Byrne and others covered songs that were popularized by artists who were not the writers, and thus did not receive compensation for radio play. Byrne chose to perform Biz Markie's 1989 hip-hop hit "Just a Friend" (along with Tift Merritt and others). Watch below via Consequence of Sound. Byrne explained the choice in his newsletter:

Mr. Markie didn’t write that tune (although he did probably write the rap). The drum and keyboard loop was lifted from a Freddie Scott recording, but the song was written by Gamble and Huff, the great songwriting team that wrote for The O’Jays and The Spinners. So chances are Biz Markie didn’t see any royalties from all the radio play that song got.

Other artists who performed last night included Mike Mills of R.E.M., Marc Ribot, Cake's John McCrea, and more.

Listen: James Murphy Previews Music for New York City Subway Stations

Listen: James Murphy Previews Music for New York City Subway Stations

James Murphy recently revealed his ambitious ideas for reimagining the sounds of New York City's subway stations. His hope is to create a system wherein turnstile swipe tones shift as stations fill up with more riders, so that turnstiles will effectively be playing pleasant music as the frequency of swipes increases. WSJ has a new clip of Murphy discussing his ideas, along with a brief preview of what the proposed tones would sound like.

"I started noticing that the subway sounds quite brutal," Murphy says. "There's a missing opportunity at the turnstile." That opportunity could be seized as New York prepares to begin a big project to reposition the subway turnstiles to increase efficiency in stations. "Given that all that information is already at the turnstile, why don't we just make it a nice sound? Just make it pleasant."

Sounds like a nice idea, right? But New York City officials aren't really buying it—MTA spokesman Adam Lisberg told the WSJ that the current sounds are grating because of a "natural technical variation and we don't really care." He also pointed out that many people have had similar ideas over the years, and it would require a lot of resources "for an art project." So Murphy has ramped up his efforts with a website and a petition for the project—find it here.

Watch Video From the Walkmen's "Final" Show

Photo via Hamilton Leithauser's Twitter

The Walkmen's indefinite hiatus is shaping up to look like a lot of bands' "indefinite hiatuses". Following what was advertised as their final show in December, they performed in New Orleans this weekend for the Rock On Foundation's first Alt-Star Party in celebration of the NBA All-Star Game. Stereogum points to video of their final song, the early favorite "We've Been Had", and a heartfelt and self-aware monologue from frontman Hamilton Leithauser:

"These guys are my best friends. It's not easy to knock us down because we have like five or six final shows, right? Like we have one and then we have another and we have another and then we have another. And then we have a reunion and then we have another reunion and then we have another reunion. 'Cause why the hell not? It's so fun playing with these guys. These guys are the best. Anyhow, you know what? This is the end. This is the last thing we'll ever do. But this is great. This is the first song we ever wrote together."

Roland Unveils New 808/909 Drum Machine Hybrid

Roland Unveils New 808/909 Drum Machine Hybrid

Gearheads, rejoice: The much-anticipated return of Roland's 808 drum machine is near. After a lot of speculation about the comeback of the classic 808, FACT reports that Roland's new machines will be unveiled at the Brighton Music Conference on April 11 and 12. Rather than a simple new version of the old TR-808, Roland will release a hybrid of the TR-808 and the TR-909, and call it the TR-8. They'll also unveil a new version of the Roland TR-303 (called the TB-3), and some new machines. It's all part of Roland's AIRA line.

"With the TR-8, we have obsessively analysed and faithfully re-created every detail and nuance of the analogue circuitry of these legendary rhythm machines," the TR-8 description reads. "The boom and snap of the 808. The thud of the 909. The robotic click of an 808 rim shot or a classic 909 snare roll. It’s all here." Find more specs here.

Video: Kevin Drew: "Good Sex"

Video: Kevin Drew: "Good Sex"

A few months ago, Kevin Drew of Broken Social Scene put out a Craigslist-esque call for couples to appear in his new video "engaged in passionate and intimate sexual moments" and "in various states of undress." He explained, "I'm looking for real couples to come make out on camera for the greater good of vulnerability."

The video—for "Good Sex", the first single from his forthcoming solo album Darlings —premiered today at Stereogum and it is... pretty much what you're imagining. Directed by Samir Rehem, it features couples making out and taking off their clothes on a spinning, light-up dance floor, while Kevin Drew writhes around and humps the ground in a shirt that appears to be splattered with blood. You do you, Kevin Drew.

In Stereogum's accompanying interview, Drew says he had about "60-70" applicants, and that to choose the couples that appear in the video, he asked them questions like, "What’s vulnerability? What’s jealousy? What’s love? What’s lust? How scared are you?"

Darlings is out March 18 via Arts & Crafts.

Boyz n the Hood/Poetic Justice director John Singleton will re-write, direct, and produce a biopic on the late Tupac Shakur, Variety reports. Echo Chamber: Kanye West Issues Statement About The Ten Year Anniversary of The College Dropout

"Ten years ago today we finally released what had been my life’s work up to that point: The College Dropout. I say 'finally' because it was a long road, a constant struggle, and a true labor of love to not only convince my peers and the public that I could be an artist, but to actually get that art out for the world to hear. I am extremely grateful to each and every person along that road who helped, lent an ear, lent their voice, gave of their heart to that project, and to all the projects that followed, and are to come. I am honored and humbled by my fans, for the unwavering support and love over the past ten years. I wake up every day trying to give something back to you that you can rock to and be proud of. Ten years later I am still the same kid from Chicago, still dreaming out loud, still banging on the door. The doors may be heavier, but I promise you WE WILL BREAK THEM."

The DMX vs. George Zimmerman Boxing Match Has Been Canceled

Damon Feldman, the promoter behind the George Zimmerman vs. DMX boxing match, has decided to pull the plug on the event, TMZ reports. "Done with George Zimmerman," he wrote, "if you had a major payday sitting in front of you, I know no one else would walk away like I did."

TMZ reports that Feldman also said that there's "more to life than money". The two men were due to box on March 1, which is when DMX was promising to "gladly beat the shit out of [Zimmerman]" and piss on his face.

Watch: Daft Punk's "Get Lucky" Performed by Russian Police Choir at Sochi Olympics Opening Ceremony

Watch: Daft Punk's "Get Lucky" Performed by Russian Police Choir at Sochi Olympics Opening Ceremony

The ubiquity of Daft Punk's "Get Lucky" just hit a new peak at the Opening Ceremony for the Sochi Olympics. The Russian Police Choir performed an incredibly bizarre cover of the song, complete with solos and a little bit of choreography, on live television, and it's just... watch it here. Now.

The choir has been practicing—a video of them doing "Get Lucky" went viral last year, too.

In other weird Sochi Opening Ceremony news, the Russian fake lesbian pop duo t.A.T.u., who had hits in the early 00s with "All the Things She Said" and "Not Gonna Get Us", also performed. They did "Not Gonna Get Us".

Watch this incredible "shredded" version of "Get Lucky" and see how it stacks up:
