More Than 60 People Injured in Stampede at Australian Music Festival

More Than 60 People Injured in Stampede at Australian Music Festival

Dozens of concertgoers were injured at Falls Festival in Australia when a stampede broke out between headlining sets from DMA and London Grammar. Several fans lost their footing running from the Grand Theatre tent to the Valley Stage, causing several people to get trampled. More than 60 people were hurt and 19 were hospitalized during the stampede, The Sydney Morning Herald reports (via Stereogum). Injuries included lower leg fractures, pelvic fractures, and cuts and bruises. The incident is being blamed on unstable ground and congestion at exits. “Worksafe has investigated and worked with Falls management and has recorded that they've made some immediate requirements for change to the facility to make sure that there is not a repeat event,” Creative Industries Minister Martin Foley told The Morning Herald

The stampede prompted festival organizers to widen tent entrances and create additional access points. “Whilst a very distressing situation, we are heartened and thankful for the amazing work of our medical teams and staff who responded with such care and support to those affected and continue to do so for the remaining duration of the festival,” a spokesperson told Stereogum. The festival will resume as normal today.

Mount Eerie Performing New Music at First Show in 2 Years

Phil Elverum has announced his first Mount Eerie concert since September 2014. The free show will take place on Friday, January 6 at the Business record shop in Anacortes, Washington. In a series of posters on the Tumblr for his record label, Elverum writes that he will perform 11 new songs, and that the acoustic show will last for about 45 minutes. He also “warns” attendees that the music will be about his late wife Geneviève, who recorded her own music as Woelv and Ô Paon. He writes:

These songs are about Geneviève getting diagnosed with bad cancer, dying, and then the feelings and events and realities of life afterward. If you are a person who says “passed away” instead of “died” you might be uncomfortable and unhappy.

See all of Elverum’s posters here. Recently, Elverum’s band the Microphones released a new album of old material called EARLY TAPES, 1996-1998.

Sony Music, Bob Dylan Accounts Hacked, Falsely Tweet Death of Britney Spears

The official Twitter accounts of Sony Music Entertainment and Bob Dylan were hacked earlier today. The compromised accounts tweeted out false reports of Britney Spears’ death. View images of the tweets below. The first message came from the Sony Music Global Twitter account—“RIP @britneyspears #RIPBritney”—and was quickly followed by a second, more dubious report (“britney spears is dead by accident! we will tell you more soon #RIPbritney”). A similar tweet was soon posted from Bob Dylan’s official Twitter account.

The news appears to have been spread by OurMine, a hacker group who were responsible for recent hacks of the Marvel and Netflix accounts, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Later tweets from both Sony and Dylan credited the organization.

Jimmy Iovine Opens Up on Frank Ocean, Kanye Streaming Deals

Jimmy Iovine Opens Up on Frank Ocean, Kanye Streaming Deals

After releasing two albums—Blonde and Endless—earlier this year exclusively on Apple Music, Frank Ocean finally stepped out of the shadows to reveal why he disappeared in the first place. In a rare interview, he explained his absence and why he split from Def Jam and chose to partner with Apple to release Blonde independently. Today, Apple Music executives Jimmy Iovine and Larry Jackson opened up about the deal and the business of streaming in a new interview with The New York Times. Iovine suggested that Apple was in no way involved in Ocean’s split from his label:

We wanted to work with Frank Ocean. We had a deal—we were working with Frank Ocean, and he controlled where his music came out. Why would it be in our interest to be part of a fast one, a slow one or any one? We were getting the record no matter what. Whatever happened with him and Universal is really between him and Universal. It has nothing to do with us. Nothing.

Iovine also talked about Kanye West’s decision to launch The Life of Pablo on Tidal instead of with Apple:

He was part of Jay’s thing and chose to make a deal with his friend, and I respect that. I kind of felt like it was going to happen before it did. Jay Z and Kanye — that’s a very natural thing for them to work together. Everybody moves on. You try to do the best with what you’ve got and ignore everything else. That’s why horses get blinders in horse racing: You look at the horse next to you, and you lose a step.

When asked which albums or artists he missed out on, he unsurprisingly picked the biggest album from best selling artist:

I would have loved to see Adele launch through the streaming service. But it wasn’t in the cards. It just wasn’t in our realm.

When asked if there was any animosity between streaming competitors, Iovine shot down the notion, using experience from his days as a producer as an analogy:

Not even one speck of it. I see Jay all the time. I want him to do great. There was never one record company. When I produced records, I used to ask Quincy [Jones] to come in and help me. We are competitors, yes. But as far as anything more, absolutely not.

Rare copies of 2010’s Melted, 2012’s Twins and 2014’s Manipulator!, which were all hand-decorated by Segall himself, will be sold on eBay. The records are all lightly used or near mint. The proceeds will go toward three different charities: the American Civil Liberties Union, Dakota Access Pipeline Donation Fund, and Planned Parenthood, respectively. Find out more information about the auctions here, here, and here.

Listen to Sad13 (Speedy Ortiz’s Sadie Dupuis) Address How to Talk Politics With Relatives in New Christmas Song

Sad13 (aka Speedy Ortiz’s Sadie Dupuis) has shared a new song for the holidays. “MCGA” is about those awkward moments around the cross-generation dinner table when politics collide. “Will we ever have a conversation where you disavow conversion therapy, stand for prison abolition, or free and unrestricted abortion rights?” she wonders in the song. “And holding sexual predators accountable and not electing them into the most powerful office in the country?” Listen below.

Dupuis’s solo LP, Slugger, came out this year.
