Kanye Says Apple and Tidal Beef “Fucking Up the Music Game”

Kanye Says Apple and Tidal Beef “Fucking Up the Music Game”

Kanye West took to Twitter today to share his thoughts on the relationship between the two music streaming services, Tidal and Apple Music. West is one of Tidal's artist co-owners, along with Jay Z, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Jack White, and others. He said he thinks that the “beef” between the two companies is “fucking up the music game.”

West also implored Apple's CEO Tim Cook, Jay Z, Drake, Apple Music's Jimmy Iovine, Drake, Apple Music's head of content Larry Jackson, and others, to get “on the phone or in a room” with him this week to hash things out. He called out both companies, saying: “Fuck all this dick swinging contest. We all gon be dead in 100 Years. Let the kids have the music.” Finally he called out Apple, saying they should write “Jay his check for Tidal now,” and that they should stop trying to act like they're “Steve.” (Presumably, he means Steve Jobs.) You can read all of Kanye's comments below.

Last month, it was reported that Apple was in talks to purchase Tidal.

Baz Luhrmann’s “The Get Down” Soundtrack Features Nas, Miguel, Jaden Smith, More

Baz Luhrmann’s “The Get Down” Soundtrack Features Nas, Miguel, Jaden Smith, More

Baz Lurhmann’s (The Great GatsbyMoulin Rouge!) upcoming Netflix drama, “The Get Down,” follows a group of teenagers in the Bronx coming of age in the late ’70s. It tells the story of the birth of hip-hop during amidst financial turmoil in New York. The program stars Shameik Moore, Justice Smith, Jaden Smith, Herizen Guardiola, and others. It was executive produced by Nas, and Grandmaster Flash served as associate producer.

The first half of the 12-episode first season will premiere on August 12. This will coincide with the release of the show’s soundtrack, via Baz Luhrmann’s label, House of Iona, and RCA Records. It will be released exclusively on Apple Music, and features contributions from the cast, Nas, Miguel, Christina Aguilera, Zayn, Michael Kiwanuka, Leon Bridges, Jaden Smith, Raury, Grandmaster Flash, Malay, Nile Rodgers, and more. Luhrmann and Nas executive produced the soundtrack.

Baz Lurhman shared a note on what he hopes people will take away from the soundtrack, in a press release:

This album is an introduction to the many musical genres and styles that can be heard in The Get Down, which is really a story of New York in the late ’70s, an incredibly fertile time of creativity amid chaos. While our production is a musical that embodies many classic hits, we also use contemporary sounds and techniques connecting the dots between then and now. My great privilege is to have associated with such a diverse musical community.

Billy Corgan Finishes Solo Album, Announces New Band

Billy Corgan Finishes Solo Album, Announces New Band

Yesterday, Billy Corgan posted a new video to the Smashing PumpkinsFacebook page to provide some news on “Impact Wrestling,” which he now co-owns, as Stereogum points out. In addition to the wrestling update, Corgan said he “just sort of finished a new solo album.” He continued, “it’s actually recorded and sort of mostly done.” Corgan says he recorded it in two weeks in California and it has all new songs. He doesn’t have a release date yet, but promises more details in “the near future.”

Corgan added that he, current Pumpkins guitarist Jeff Schroeder, and Jack Bates (who’s played bass with the Pumpkins) are starting a new band. They haven’t figured out a band name yet, but they’ll start working on new music next week. He said that Katie Cole, Sierra Swan, and Linda Strawberry (all of whom have worked with Corgan in the past) will “probably” be involved with the project, as well, and he described the band as “much different from Pumpkins music.”

Finally, Corgan said, “speaking on Pumpkins, there’s some big stuff happening, so we’re making plans.” He teased, “it’s gonna be interesting.” Watch the video below.

Corgan’s latest update follows a year’s worth of Pumpkin reunion-related news. In June 2015, original drummer Jimmy Chamberlin rejoined the band. Then, original guitarist James Iha’s played two shows with the band back in March–his first since 2000. In April, founding bassist D’arcy Wretzky said she would “consider going back” to the band. Shortly after Wretzky’s comments, Corgan wrote in a note to fans that he was “encouraged to hear that she is playing music once more, and writing songs.” He then tempered expectations of an original lineup reunion, but did not rule out the possibility completely: “And as I feel speculation start to swirl about what happens next for SP, I’d like to say quite simply and directly that what matters most to Jeff [Schroeder] and I is the music.”

Watch Massive Attack and Ghostpoet’s New Video “Come Near Me”

After releasing a trio of new songs via their Fantom app, Massive Attack have shared the video for one of them, “Come Near Me.” Watch the Ed Morris-directed visual below. It stars Kosovan actor Arta Dobroshi, who walks backwards through town while holding a man’s gaze. (Midway in, a Peugot drives by blasting “Unfinished Sympathy.”) As of this morning, another of the songs released on Fantom, “The Spoils”—which appears to be the title track of a new EP—is also available in full. Listen to that below as well.

Watch the National Bring Out St. Vincent to Perform a New Song

The National performed a new song, “Prom Song 13th Century (Frankie & Johnny),” at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles last night. To offer a hand, they brought out St. Vincent, who duetted with Matt Berninger while peering over a lyric sheet on the floor. At the end, they joined hands for a dance and twirl. “I realized I don’t know how to spin somebody,” Berninger said, sadly. Watch it happen below.
