Adult Swim's "Black Dynamite" to Air Police Brutality Musical Featuring Erykah Badu, Tyler The Creator, Others

Adult Swim's "Black Dynamite" will air a musical special that addresses police brutality on January 10, 2015 at 10:30 PM. The 1-hour animated episode, called "The Wizard of Watts", will feature guest appearances from Erykah Badu, Tyler, The Creator, Tim Blake Nelson and J.B. Smoove.

"Black Dynamite" follows a crime-fighting title character whose job it is to keep his city safe from, among other threats, "ninjas, a young Michael Jackson, Bill Cosby and Richard Nixon" (it takes place in the 1970s). According to the press release, "The Wizard of Watts" will follow Black Dynamite as he attempts to take a vacation, during which time police start patrolling the streets and a riot breaks out. Black Dynamite is then hit in the head with a brick, which causes him to hallucinate into the Magical Land of Oz-Watts, where he is called upon to defend the community from the police.

“As a comedy writer, I feel it’s my job to make people laugh while using constructive social criticism to evoke thought and inspire dialogue,” said Carl Jones, who directed and co-wrote the upcoming special with Byron Minns.

Smith Westerns Confirm Breakup

Smith Westerns Confirm Breakup

Smith Westerns frontman Cullen Omori recently announced on twitter that the band was going on indefinite hiatus, and now, he's confirmed the band's official breakup.

According to an interview with The Chicago Reader , the band plans to break up permanently after their December 23 show at Schubas in Chicago, because guitarist Max Kakacek has left the band.

"The band just didn't work, both creatively and personally. The terminology I used, 'indefinite hiatus', I thought was a clever way of saying 'it's not going to happen in the future'. But yeah, there's no plans to reignite Smith Westerns. It's broken up. Me and Cameron, when Max left the band, we decided we weren't going to dissolve it until we played these last shows because it sprang up on all of us," said Cullen.

Smith Westerns' most recent record was 2013's Soft Will . Watch them discuss it in an interview on Pitchfork.tv:
