Mutual Benefit Covers Vashti Bunyan’s “Jog Along Bess” and “Glow Worms”: Listen

Mutual Benefit has announced a full-length cover album of Vashti Bunyan’s 1970 debut Just Another Diamond Day. It’s out June 23 via Turntable Kitchen. The album is part of Sounds Delicious—the label's monthly vinyl subscription series in which artists cover their favorite albums in full. Mutual Benefit’s Jordan Lee discussed his decision to cover Bunyan’s debut in a statement. “Since my school days, it’s been one of those pieces of music that has been able to transport me to a calmer, more magical world than the one we currently inhabit,” Lee said in a press release. Lee has shared two tracks off the forthcoming LP—“Jog Along Bess” and “Glow Worms.” Listen below via NPR.

Jordan Lee’s installment of the series follows Jonathan Rado’s rendition of Bruce Springsteen’s Born to Run and Yumi Zuma doing Oasis’ (What’s the Story) Morning Glory.

Drake Beats Lawsuit Over “Pound Cake/Paris Morton Music 2” Sample

Drake Beats Lawsuit Over “Pound Cake/Paris Morton Music 2” Sample

Back in 2014, Drake was sued for copyright infringement over the spoken word sample that opens his Jay Z-featuring Nothing Was the Same track “Pound Cake/Paris Morton Music 2.” The lawsuit was brought by the estate of jazz musician Jimmy Smith, whose 1982 song “Jimmy Smith Rap” gets prominently sampled on Drake’s track. Yesterday, a judge determined that the sample is fair use and therefore, there’s no liability for copyright infringement, THR reports. In his opinion, U.S. District Court judge William H. Pauley III broke down how the use of the sample constitutes fair use.

In the original, Smith says, “Jazz is the only real music that’s gonna last. All that other bullshit is here today and gone tomorrow. But jazz was, is and always will be.” In Drake’s version, it’s cut down to, “Only real music's gonna last. All that other bullshit is here today and gone tomorrow.” Judge Pauley notes that Smith’s original “is an unequivocal statement on the primacy of jazz over all other forms of popular music” while Drake’s version turns it into “a statement that ‘real music,’ with no qualifiers, is ‘the only thing that's gonna last.’”

Because the purpose of the “Pound Cake” edit is “sharply different” from Smith’s original message, Judge Pauley argues Drake’s use “adds something new” and is “transformative.” Therefore, he writes, “this factor weighs in favor of a finding of fair use.”

Smith’s estate also argued that by using 35 seconds of the minute-long track, Drake “appropriated an unreasonable portion” of the song. Judge Pauley disagreed, saying the sample’s length is “reasonable in proportion to the needs of the intended transformative use.” He continued:

The full extent of the commentary is, in this Court’s view, that many musicians make records in similar ways (e.g. with the help of A&R experts or the stimulating effects of champagne), but that only “real” music—regardless of creative process or genre—will stand the test of time. Accordingly, this factor favors a finding of fair use.

Boi-1da and Jordan Evans, the producers of the track, were also named in the lawsuit alongside Drake, Cash Money, Universal, EMI, Republic, Apple, Amazon, and others. Find both “Pound Cake/Paris Morton Music 2” and “Jimmy Smith Rap” below.

Eagles of Death Metal Recorded 2 Songs With Kesha

Eagles of Death Metal Recorded 2 Songs With Kesha

Eagles of Death Metal guitarist Dave Catching released his debut solo album Shared Hallucinations Pt. 1 earlier this month. In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Catching discussed his new album and gave an update on what’s going on with Eagles of Death Metal. At one point, he revealed that the whole band recorded two songs with Kesha for her forthcoming album. “She used to come to Eagles shows when she was 16,” Catching said. “She was always a big fan. Then I remember we got back from Europe ... and she was on every magazine cover when we landed from a tour. It was really amazing.”

Shared Hallucinations Pt. 1 is Catching’s first release following the 2015 terrorist attack at an Eagles of Death Metal show at Paris’ Bataclan. In the interview, he also discusses joining U2 onstage in Paris, his reaction to the bombing at Ariana Grande’s show in Manchester, and more. Read it here.

Travis Scott Shares New “way back” Video Starring James Harden: Watch

Travis Scott has shared the self-directed music video for “way back” from 2016’s Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight. The clip stars Houston Rockets guard James Harden, whom Travis name-drops on the track. It begins with Harden watching TV coverage about himself, including footage from Lil B’s 2015 ESPN appearance where he discussed his curse on the NBA star. He then goes to the gym to practice. The visual closes with Travis lounging in the back of a convertible. He said of the video on Twitter, “I did this for a project I did in Houston a while ago.” Watch it below.

Travis Scott has previously shared music videos for Birds’ “goosebumps,” “pick up the phone,” and “beibs in the trap.” Earlier this month, he shared three new tracks. He is set to appear on Major Lazer’s new song “Know No Better,” which is out tomorrow.

Liam Gallagher Shares Video for New Song “Wall of Glass”: Watch

Liam Gallagher Shares Video for New Song “Wall of Glass”: Watch

Liam Gallagher’s debut solo album As You Were is due out this year. Today, he’s shared the first single from that album. It’s called “Wall of Glass,” and it’s got a slick new François Rousselet-directed music video that’s full of mirrors. Watch it below. According to Gallagher, the video’s visuals were inspired in part by James Bond and Bruce Lee films. “I did get to wear a gold Saint Laurent hooded jacket in one scene, which I convinced myself made me look like a modern day Elvis, as he loved to wear gold suits,” he told Pitchfork via email. Gallagher has also revealed that the new album will arrive sometime in October. “I think it’s up there with the best work I’ve ever done,” Gallagher said of the album. “And so will you, when you hear it.”

Last night, Gallagher played his first solo UK show at the Manchester Ritz, with profits benefiting victims of the Manchester Arena bombing. While rumors swirled about Noel and Liam setting aside their differences for a one-off reunion, the Gallagher brothers haven’t buried the hatchet just yet. “I’ve said this a million times before—the person holding an Oasis reunion back is Noel, not me,” Liam told Pitchfork. Instead, Gallagher reunited with a different Oasis bandmate, Paul “Bonehead” Arthurs. Find footage of him performing Oasis’ “Be Here Now” below.

In recent weeks, Gallagher has taken to his Twitter account to make fun of his brother’s collaboration with Damon Albarn on the new Gorillaz album. When asked if he expects Noel to retaliate and criticize his new solo music, Liam replied, “Probably not, he’s not brave enough.” (He also doubled down on the whole “potato” thing: “I honestly think he looks like one.”)

In March, he announced he’d be playing his first-ever solo North American show at Osheaga. He’s also set for this year’s Lollapalooza, and Gallagher says that more North American shows will be announced later this year.

Arcade Fire Tease “Everything Now” and “Infinite Content”

Arcade Fire Tease “Everything Now” and “Infinite Content”

Arcade Fire have teased “Infinite Content.” Along with the message “Stay tuned for Infinite Content,” they’ve shared an image of a stylized infinity symbol with a copyright symbol. They’ve used a similar band logo since February. Win Butler also used the phrase “infinite content” during an RBMA lecture. See Arcade Fire’s tweet below. Speculation about new Arcade Fire music increased yesterday when Vancouver radio station the Peak tweeted, “Hold onto your bobble heads, @arcadefire have promised us a new tune on Friday!” That tweet has since been deleted.

Fansite Arcade Fire Tube has also shared a mysterious teaser video that they claim is connected to the band. The video features a logo that says “NOW” and another that is a globe with “EN” on it. Posters with that “NOW” logo have apparently appeared in London. In addition, Arcade Fire Tube claim that a new song called “Everything Now” is set to arrive June 1. Merch with the “NOW,” “EN,” and infinity symbol logos have appeared at Arcade Fire’s Primavera booth. The shirts also say “Everything Now” Pitchfork has reached out to Arcade Fire’s representatives for more information.

Kurt Vile Covers Lou Reed, Impersonates Bob Dylan on “The Best Show”: Listen

Kurt Vile Covers Lou Reed, Impersonates Bob Dylan on “The Best Show”: Listen

Longtime “The Best Show” fan Kurt Vile was a guest on last night’s episode, and so was folk-rocker Steve Gunn. Vile performed an old song with new lyrics called “Blue Cheese,” and later, covered Lou Reed’s “Sword of Damocles” (at 3:10:00). Gunn’s performance of “Wildwood” devolved into him singing the chorus of John Mayer’s “Your Body Is a Wonderland.” At one point, Vile started doing an absurd impression of Bob Dylan (circa Blood on the Tracks and Desire). Elsewhere in the episode, Tom Scharpling eggs on Vile to say something “Pitchfork-worthy” and asks him to name artists who suck. (According to Vile, every artist “stinks,” including Interpol, Grizzly Bear, Radiohead, Flying Lotus, Led Zeppelin, Bleachers, and Pearl Jam. The Clean get a pass, though.) It’s another classic “Best Show.” Listen here.

Last year, Vile called into an episode and did his Neil Young impression (which he did during this new episode, too) and a month later appeared on the show to perform in person. Scharpling also directed Vile’s 2013 “KV Crimes” video.

Recently, Vile reissued a pair of EPs from 2010 and 2011, Square Shells and So Outta Reach. Vile also recently revealed that he was recording with Courtney Barnett. His last full-length album, the excellent b’lieve i’m goin down, came out in 2015. Gunn released his album, Eyes on the Line, last year.

Radiohead Revisit OK Computer in Rare, Intimate Interview

Radiohead Revisit OK Computer in Rare, Intimate Interview

As they prepare to release OKNOTOK, the 20th anniversary reissue of OK Computer, Radiohead have granted Rolling Stone a rare interview exploring the anxieties, obsessions, and “really fucking geeky” themes involved in the classic LP’s creation. In the piece, Thom Yorke—whose iPhone apparently has a sticker on the back reading, “Fuck what you heard”—reflects, with dry wit, on the tumultuous time. “I was basically catatonic,” he says. “Back then, the person I saw in the mirror kept saying, ‘You’re shit. Everything you do is shit. Don’t do that. It’s shit.’”

After releasing The Bends, the OK Computer era began with Radiohead’s tour supporting Alanis Morrissette. Jonny Greenwood says, “My main memory of that tour is playing interminable hand-organ solos to an audience full of quietly despairing teenage girls.” Adds Yorke, “People are sitting down to their chicken dinners. We were trying to get them to choke on the bones.”

Recalling OK Computer’s recording at St. Catharine’s Court, Yorke relays an anecdote about their apparently haunted living quarters. “Ghosts would talk to me while I was asleep,” he tells RS. “There was one point where I got up in the morning after a night of hearing voices and decided I had to cut my hair.” Yorke attempted to do so using “the little scissors on a penknife,” he explains, but it “got messy. I cut myself a few times. ... I came downstairs and everyone was like, ‘Uh, are you all right?’ I was like, ‘What's wrong?’ Phil very gently took me downstairs and shaved it all off.” Of the link between his uneasy headspace and the album’s themes of technological anxiety, Yorke adds, “The paranoia I felt at the time was much more related to how people related to each other. But I was using the terminology of technology to express it.”

The group also touch on the recording of last year’s A Moon Shaped Pool, which was mired in tragedy: Yorke had recently separated from his partner, Rachel Owen, who was battling cancer. (She passed away last December.) Ed O’Brien says, “We weren't in a position to really talk about A Moon Shaped Pool when it came out. We didn't want to talk about it being quite hard to make. We were quite fragile, and we needed to find our feet. I don’t want to talk about it anymore, if that’s all right. I feel like the dust hasn’t settled. It was a hard time.” Yorke says of the period, “There was a lot of difficult stuff going on at the time, and it was a tough time for us as people. It was a miracle that that record got made at all.”

The piece concludes with a glance at a possible next-step for Radiohead. “I’ve always been extreme about resisting us being a drum-guitar-bass band,” he says. “But if that’s what people want to try, I’m too old to be standing there with a hammer and saying, ‘We must do this, we must do that!’ I would like everyone to feel free. But, you know, it’s not easy.”

Nas Calls Donald Trump a Racist in Open Letter

Nas Calls Donald Trump a Racist in Open Letter

Nas didn’t mince words about President Donald Trump in an open letter he shared on Mass Appeal today. “We all know a racist is in office,” he wrote. “People can talk their shit...but when you have the responsibility of being President and you carry on like that, you send a strong message to people outside of your group that they ain’t worth shit.” Nas insisted that it doesn’t matter who is in office, but rather how their actions affect the citizens they govern. “My way of addressing these issues is through my work,” he continued. “I observe what’s going on and that goes into my creative process. The person himself, I’m not caught up with. I don’t even have time for Trump or Pence. I don’t give a fuck.” Read the entire letter here.

It’s not the first time he’s voiced his opinion about Trump. He obliquely went after the then-presidential candidate in his 2016 collaboration with DJ Khaled, “Nas Album Done,” saying, “‘Celebrity Apprentice’ a devil show.” (Watch the video for that song here.) He also called Trump a “toupee-wearing liar” during his verse on Robin Thicke’s single “Deep.”

Several rappers have been vocal about their disdain for Trump, including Snoop Dogg, who released a music video for “Lavender” that featured a Trump lookalike dressed as a clown. Trump himself tweeted about it

The Drums Share New Song “Head of the Horse”: Listen

The Drums Share New Song “Head of the Horse”: Listen

The Drums have shared a new track called “Head of the Horse” off their forthcoming album “Abysmal Thoughts”, which is out June 16 via Anti-. Listen below. Frontman Jonny Pierce said in a statement that he wrote the song about his Pentecostal preacher parents, who were anti-LGBTQ. Growing up in that atmosphere led to “a childhood that was riddled with self doubt, confusion and a lot of self-hate,” he said in a press release. “I find that the past still dominates a lot of my daily experiences—sometimes to the point of feeling paralyzed. The goal is to heal, and I think I am—but at a much slower pace than I am comfortable with.” The new song follows “Blood Under My Belt.” Watch the music video for that song here.

Flying Lotus Appears in David Firth’s Creepy New Short Film: Watch

David Firth, the creator of “Salad Fingers,” has an unsettling new short film called Cream. It comes courtesy of Flying LotusBrainfeeder Films, and as it turns out, the short features the voice of Flying Lotus himself. “I asked him to record the sounds of panic for when the ‘terrifying footage’ occurs,” Firth told Pitchfork via email. Around the 7:50 mark, Flying Lotus can be heard screaming, “Oh my God, it’s killing us!” He’s also the voice of the billionaire talking on the phone in his car. If you look carefully, you can see his face in the audience of the product’s unveiling. Watch it below.

Cream is the story of a new miracle product that seems to cure all the world’s ills. It debuted last year as part of a Brainfeeder event in London. Firth is the co-writer of Flying Lotus’ new film Kuso, which gets a theatrical release later this year.

Avey Tare Teases New Album Eucalyptus by Sending Jigsaw Puzzles to Fans

Animal Collective’s Avey Tare seems to be teasing a forthcoming new album in a very specific way. A Redditor claims to have received a mysterious package in the mail from Domino Records—the label behind albums from Avey Tare’s Slasher Flicks and Animal Collective. Avey Tare’s representatives have confirmed that he and Domino sent the puzzles. According to the jigsaw, the new record will feature Angel Deradoorian (of Slasher Flicks), Eyvind Kang, Jessika Kenney, and Susan Alcorn. Find the names of the tracks below.

The Fall Announce New Album With Unfortunate Song Title “Victoria Train Station Massacre”

The Fall Announce New Album With Unfortunate Song Title “Victoria Train Station Massacre”

The Fall have announced a new album. The latest from the Manchester band is called New Facts Emerge, and it is due out July 28 via Cherry Red Records. It’s produced by frontman Mark E. Smith and drummer Keiron Melling. Included on the 11-track record is a song titled “Victoria Train Station Massacre.” A representative for Cherry Red told Clash that the title is not a reference to last week's suicide bombing at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, which occurred in a foyer connecting Manchester Arena to Manchester Victoria railway station. “The track is nothing to do with the events last week, but it is an unfortunate coincidence," the rep said. "The track was recorded and the artwork sent off for manufacture long before the terrible events in Manchester.”

In 1991, Victoria station in London was bombed by the I.R.A.

LCD Soundsystem Say New Album Could Be Out in 6 Weeks

LCD Soundsystem Say New Album Could Be Out in 6 Weeks

Last Friday, LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy announced at Sasquatch! festival that the group’s new album was finally finished. Today he’s spoken more about the record, which has been recorded, mixed, and mastered. “The lacquers are winging their way to the pressing plant,” Murphy writes in a Facebook post. He adds that he’s been “wrangling the fastest route between final mix and record release,” and that he thinks “it'll be soon.” A release date six weeks from now—in mid-July—is the “very fastest,” he writes, admitting it’ll “likely be longer than that.” He also said it would be the final LP recorded at the original DFA studios. “I've been there nearly 20 years now, and i wasn't a particularly young man when it opened, so there's that.” See the post below.

The group recently released two new songs—“Call the Police” and American Dream”—and performed both on “SNL.” Following their Brooklyn residency, LCD Soundsystem will headline Pitchfork Music Festival 2017 with A Tribe Called Quest and Solange. The festival takes place in Chicago’s Union Park from July 14–16. Get tickets here.

The Pitchfork Guide to Upcoming Releases: Summer 2017

The Pitchfork Guide to Upcoming Releases: Summer 2017

Welcome back to the Pitchfork Guide to Upcoming Releases, our seasonal guide to new music. Four times a year, we round up a list of albums, singles, EPs, reissues, and more arriving in the coming months. This installment covers summer 2017, starting with this Friday, June 2. (Please note that release dates may change.) To start things off, we’ve highlighted a few particularly notable releases, including albums by Phoenix, Broken Social Scene, Fleet Foxes, Vince Staples, Lana Del Rey, the War on Drugs, Haim, Radiohead, Grizzly Bear, SZA, and more. For more about the releases we’re most excited for in 2017, check out our feature from the beginning of the year.

Amber Coffman: City of No Reply (June 2, Columbia)

Former Dirty Projectors member Amber Coffman will be making her solo debut with the release of City of No Reply. She worked with Dirty Projectors’ Dave Longstreth on the album in 2015, recording it in his Los Angeles studio. She has already shared three tracks from the project, including “Nobody Knows,” “All to Myself” and “No Coffee.” In March, Coffman detailed her decision to leave the band, and ended with her hopes for her new music. “I’ve waited a long time to share it and I’m looking forward to it,” she said.

Big Thief: Capacity (June 9, Saddle Creek)

Singer and guitarist Adrianna Lenker said of Big Thief’s forthcoming album Capacity, “There is a darker darkness and a lighter light on this album.” The band have already shared their first single, “Mythological Beauty.” It recalls a moment from Lenker’s childhood when a railroad spike came close to killing her after it accidentally landed on her head. Watch the music video for the song here. Big Thief released their last album, Masterpiece, in 2016. They are currently on tour until the end of August.

Phoenix: Ti Amo (June 9, Loyauté/Glassnote)

Phoenix are back after a four year absence, with their sixth studio album, Ti Amo. They recorded their follow-up to 2013’s Bankrupt!  in late 2014 at the Pompidou Center in Paris. The band has released the title track and “J-Boy” so far. The music video for “J-Boy” finds the band performing on a fake TV program. Phoenix are currently on tour until the end of September.

Fleet Foxes: Crack-Up (June 16, Nonesuch Records)

According to bandleader Robin Pecknold, Fleet Foxes’ third studio album “deals with perception, and the difference between how I have seen the world and how it actually is.” Crack-Up is the group’s fourth studio album; their last full-length Helplessness Blues, was released in 2011. In the years since, Pecknold enrolled in (and graduated from) Columbia University. Two singles from Crack-Up have been released thus far: “Third of May / Ōdaigahara” and the technicolor “Fool’s Errand.” Check out the video for the latter here, and find the band’s upcoming tour dates here.

Lorde: Melodrama (June 16, LAVA/Republic)

Lorde’s next full-length record Melodrama is due out in June, featuring previously released songs “Green Light” and the more somber “Liability.” It marks the singer-songwriter’s sophomore album; her debut Pure Heroine was released when Lorde (real name Ella Yelich-O'Connor) was 16. In an interview, she revealed the new album would be about “all the gross moments, all the great moments” of early adulthood.

Radiohead: OKNOTOK (June 23, XL)

Radiohead are celebrating the 20th anniversary of their seminal album OK Computer with a special reissue. Titled OKNOTOKthe album includes the remastered original, eight B-sides, and three previously unreleased songs: “I Promise,” “Man of War,” and “Lift.” Radiohead cryptically teased the release with a series of posters featuring the dates 1997 and 2017. Although the album will be available digitally on June 23, physical copies won’t ship until July. Their last album was 2016’s A Moon Shaped Pool.

Vince Staples: Big Fish Theory (June 23, Def Jam)

Vince Staples returns with his third full-length LP, Big Fish Theory, in June. It marks his fourth project in as many years, and features previously released tracks, “BagBak” and his latest “Big Fish.” Watch the music video for that song here. Earlier this year, he connected the marine theme from his new title with his North American “The Life Aquatic Tour.” The poster featured art inspired by the Wes Anderson-directed cult classic. Staples’ forthcoming album follows his 2016 EP, Prima Donna, and his 2015 sophomore effort, Summertime ’06.

SZA: CTRL (June 23, Top Dawg Entertainment)

The much-anticipated follow-up to SZA’s 2014 album Z, titled CTRL, is finally on its way. The record is set to include three previously released songs: “Love Galore,” “Drew Barrymore,” and “twoAM,” a rework of PARTYNEXTDOOR and Drake's “Come and See Me.” The RZA narrated a video announcing the release date, concluding, “And it’s my honor to drop this lesson, it’s my honor to give this blessing.”

Cornelius: Mellow Waves (June 28 [Japan]/July 21 [Worldwide], Rostrum)

Keigo Oyamada, aka Cornelius, returns with his Sensuous follow-up. It marks the first album in 11 years from the Japanese producer, whose résumé includes remixes and production work for artists like Blur, Beck, Bloc Party, MGMT, and James Brown. Coming off the back of a tour last year, behind the reissue of 1997’s excellent Fantasma, the album is led by the single and video “あなたがいるなら (If You’re Here).”

Calvin Harris: Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 (June 30, Sony)

British producer/DJ Calvin Harris releases his follow-up to 2014’s Motion this summer. After promising he’d “worked with the greatest artists of our generation,” Harris unveiled an all-star guest list: Frank Ocean, Travis Scott, Nicki Minaj, Future, Pharrell, Katy Perry, Big Sean, John Legend, Khalid, Migos, Schoolboy Q, Ariana Grande, Young Thug, D.R.A.M., Kehlani, and more. He’s already released “Slide,” with Frank Ocean and Migos, as well as “Heatstroke” (featuring Young Thug, Pharrell, and Ariana Grande) and “Rollin’” with Future and Khalid.

Broken Social Scene: Hug of Thunder (July 7, City Slang/Arts & Crafts)

Broken Social Scene declared a hiatus after their last LP, 2010’s Forgiveness Rock Record. Now, seven years later, they make their return with a new album, Hug of Thunder. It finds the band reuniting with Leslie Feist, who made her solo comeback earlier this year with Pleasure. They’ve previously shared the songs “Halfway Home” (which they performed on “Colbert” in March) and “Hug of Thunder” (with Feist). The album features appearances from Metric members Emily Haines and James Shaw, Stars members Amy Millan and Evan Cranley, and more.

Haim: Something to Tell You (July 7, Columbia)

Back in April, sister trio Haim announced that the follow-up to their 2013 debut Days Are Gone with a performance video of new song “Right Now” directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. Shortly after, they revealed the full details for Something to Tell You and shared a new song “Want You Back” as well as the studio rendition of “Right Now.” The band also performed new track “Little of Your Love” on “SNL.” Something to Tell You was produced by Haim with Ariel Reichstad and features contributions from former Vampire Weekend member Rostam Batmanglij.

Japanese Breakfast: Soft Sounds From Another Planet (July 14, Dead Oceans)

Soft Sounds From Another Planet is the new album from Japanese Breakfast (aka Eugene, Oregon songwriter Michelle Zauner). It follows up her 2016 album Psychopomp. Zauner previously shared the song “Machinist” and its self-directed video. “The song is a sci-fi narrative about a woman who falls in love with a robot,” she said, “In the video she hallucinates on rocket fuel and tears apart her spaceship in an attempt to build a body for her robot lover.” Zauner will tour the album through the summer.

Shabazz Palaces: Quazars: Born on a Gangster StarQuazars vs. the Jealous Machines (July 14, Sub Pop)

Shabazz Palaces return with not one but two new albums, both of which tell the story of Quazarz—a “sentient being from somewhere else.” Born on a Gangster Star includes the single “Shine a Light” (named Best New Track) and “Since C.A.Y.A.,” and it features guest appearances from  the Strokes’ Julian Casblanacas, Thundercat, Gamble and Huff, and more. Quazarz vs. the Jealous Machines is the former LP’s “extra-spatial twin” and will be available as a limited-edition illustrated album, drawn by cartoonist Joshua Ray Stephens. It features “30 Clip Extension” as well as a song called “Love in the time of Kanye.”

Sheer Mag: Need to Feel Your Love (July 14, Wilsuns RC)

Need to Feel Your Love is the debut album from Philadelphia rock band Sheer Mag, following their excellent trilogy of EPs (and a remastered compilation). It features the song “Just Can’t Get Enough,” which the band described as “a straight up and down rock ballad about ACTUALLY being in love, which is something we don’t often write about without being cynical in some way.” The band will tour the album through the summer, with their last date scheduled for September.

Lana Del Rey: Lust for Life (July 21, Polydor)

It took a minute but Lana Del Rey’s follow-up to 2015’s Honeymoon finally has an official release date. Lana has so far shared two tracks from the project, including “Love” and her collaboration with the Weeknd, “Lust for Life.” Watch their video here. She also debuted another new track, “Cherry,” when she performed at KROQ Weenie Roast Y Fiesta. Besides the Weeknd, Lana tapped Sean Lennon and Stevie Nicks for her forthcoming LP. Nicks will appear on the song, “Beautiful People, Beautiful Problems.”

Downtown Boys: Cost of Living (August 11, Sub Pop)

In August, Downtown Boys make their Sub Pop debut with Cost of Living. So far, they have shared the project’s first single, “A Wall.” Frontwoman Victoria Ruiz told Pitchfork in January about her Kendrick Lamar fandom. “To be honest, I would rather play with Kendrick Lamar than, like, Bikini Kill or Nirvana,” she said. The band will be performing at Pitchfork’s Northside Festival showcase in June. They released their last album, Full Communism, in 2015.

Grizzly Bear: Painted Ruins (August 18, RCA)

After releasing their excellent album Shields in 2012, Grizzly Bear return with a new LP, Painted Ruins, in August. They have already shared two singles, including “Mourning Sound” and “Three Rings.” The band will launch their tour in October with dates in North America and Europe. See their full itinerary here. In 2013, they released Shields: B-Sides, a collection of demos they recorded in Marfa, Texas, after returning from their short hiatus and working on what would eventually become Shields

The National: Sleep Well Beast (September 8, 4AD)

Following their massive Grateful Dead compilation, A Lot of Sorrow, and their previous album Trouble Will Find Me, the National are back with their seventh studio LP. Sleep Well Beast features 12 new songs, including their new single “The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness” (named Best New Track). The band recorded it in Aaron Dessner’s Long Pond studio in Hudson Valley, New York, as well as in Los Angeles, Paris, and Berlin. The band will also embark on a world tour behind the new album.

LCD Soundsystem: TBA (TBD, Columbia)

LCD Soundsystem were gone for good, and then suddenly, they weren’t. They returned with a Christmas song, played a bunch of festivals, and promised a new album. This year, the band have inched closer to fulfilling the promise of that new LP. They released two new singles—“American Dream” and “Call the Police.” They performed both songs on “Saturday Night Live.” As they released the new singles, James Murphy promised that the album was “seriously almost done,” and during a more recent festival he announced it was “finally done.”

The War on Drugs: TBA (TBD, Atlantic)

This year, the War on Drugs released their first new original piece of music since their excellent 2014 album Lost in the Dream. “Thinking of a Place” was released as a Record Store Day single, and later, arrived on streaming services. Now that they’ve announced a world tour and shared some new music, the next record seems to be around the corner. An announcement is still forthcoming, but Adam Granduciel told Pitchfork that the new one will be “gooey, punchy, thick, big-sounding”—”a little different than some of the records we've made in the past, but the same general feeling in the music.”
