We wanted to share outtakes from these sessions in all their unedited glory with you, and put them out as an extremely limited edition cassette, available mainly through our webstores (though you may see a copy or two floating around in the wild).”

Soundgarden Announce Badmotorfinger 25th Anniversary Reissue

Soundgarden Announce Badmotorfinger 25th Anniversary Reissue

Soundgarden released their third album Badmotorfinger in October 1991. In a new interview, guitarist Kim Thayil has revealed that they will reissue the album for its 25th anniversary, as Stereogum points out. It’s currently slated to come out November 18. In a 2014 interview, Thayil had said that the reissue could include b-sides, live material, and rehearsal material. In addition, Thayil said that Soundgarden are remastering and remixing their 1988 debut Ultramega OK, which would be re-released via Sub Pop. He also said that the band have “something slated for Black Friday.” Read the full interview here.

In 2014, Soundgarden reissued Superunknown for its 20th anniversary. Earlier this year, they re-released 1989’s Louder Than Love and 1996’s Down on the Upside on vinyl. The supergroup Temple of the Dog, which features Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell, reissued their self-titled record. They will tour soon.

Indie Rock Musicians Suck at Business Communications, New Study Finds

Indie Rock Musicians Suck at Business Communications, New Study Finds

A new academic study breaks down some of the business challenges facing independent musicians. Stephen Carradini, a Ph.D. student at North Carolina State, surveyed a group of self-described indie rock musicians nationwide, ranging in age from 18 to 43. He found that their work included plenty of communications tasks—ones that probably weren’t what they set out to do when they decided to become musicians. Audience development, slow growth, and an uneven balance of power emerged as the key themes underlying these musicians’ accounts of their professional lives, according to the 24-page study, “An Organizational Structure of Indie Rock Musicians as Displayed by Facebook Usage,” which was published this week in the Journal of Technical Writing and Communication.

“It’s one more call to arms of, ‘Hey, you need to know something about the business,’” Carradini told Pitchfork over the phone. “You can’t just go into it without having some background of how the industry works.”

When it came to developing an audience, the musicians told Carradini they spent time finding and maintaining their fan base through various social-media efforts, including Facebook advertisements, though not all respondents felt those ads worked well. Musicians’ networks, whether measured by Facebook likes or their contacts like managers, booking agents, and record labels, expanded only gradually, according to the study (“To be pulled from never heard of a band to going to see somehow is hard when there is just so much out there and so much going on,” one survey respondent said). The study also found an uneven playing field for musicians, where venues, labels, technologies, and other third parties surrounding the artists held all the leverage, partly because musicians couldn’t afford to hire publicists or booking agents.

Carradini, a music journalist who cites Michael Azerrad’s 2001 indie history Our Band Could Be Your Life in the study, acknowledged his findings aren’t necessarily groundbreaking, but said he hoped his work would raise awareness about the music business among both listeners and musicians. “This is part of an ongoing conversation about what it means to be a musician,” he said.

One lesson for musicians, according to Carradini, is that, like it or not, they need to start paying attention to business communication. “So, thinking along the lines of business strategy: ‘How am I going to pitch this to my audience?’” he explained. “Thinking in terms of developing a brand. A lot of bands do that, but a lot of bands still don’t.”

For listeners, the study could be another reminder of the work that goes on behind the music that streams over their headphones. “It’s important to realize that these people are working in an environment that’s really difficult,” he said. “There are a lot of institutional barriers for musicians. And the more that listeners know about them, the more that they can make informed choices and, if they’re interested, get involved in some of the ways that the music business is changing.”

The paper is part of a dissertation that Carradini said he was currently writing, which will explore the business communication practices of indie rock musicians as well as classical musicians.

Find out more about the study on NC State’s website.

Watch Jimmy Kimmel’s New HBO Parody “Kanye Westworld”

Watch Jimmy Kimmel’s New HBO Parody “Kanye Westworld”

Westworld” is an upcoming HBO sci-fi series about a futuristic theme park. Ahead of its premiere on Sunday, October 2, Jimmy Kimmel parodied the show on last night’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” He turned the show into “Kanye Westworld,” splicing in clips from West’s hourlong, tearful interview with Zane Lowe from 2013. Watch Kimmel’s spoof below.

West’s Zane Lowe interview is notable to both the rapper and Kimmel. Following the interview, Kimmel had a child recreate many of West’s answers in a sketch. Kimmel said on air, “He said he’s the number one rockstar on the planet, whatever planet he’s on.” He also asked, “Does Kanye West know you’re not supposed to be your own hype man? Is it a money-saving thing?”

West did not take kindly to Kimmel’s sketch. In response, he lashed out on Twitter against the TV host. He wrote (in all-caps), “Jimmy Kimmel is out of line to try and spoof in any way the first piece of honest media in years.” In the tirade, he also called Kimmel a “manipulative media mutherfucker,” and said that his ex-girlfriend and fellow comedian “Sarah Silerman is a thousand times funnier than [him] and the whole world knows it!!!”

Shortly after West’s response, Kimmel invited him on his show. They discussed the incident, and Kimmel gave West a pair of baby-sized leather jogging pants (a point of contention at the time) for North.

Earlier this year, Kimmel parodied West’s “Famous” video.

The Weeknd, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Calvin Harris, LL Cool J, More Invest in UFC

In July, the WME-IMG talent agency purchased the Ultimate Fighting Championship (the largest promoter of professional mixed martial arts) for a price of $4 billion. It’s now been revealed that the agency asked celebrities to help them finance their acquisition, according to ESPN. They were required to make a minimum contribution of $250,000 to become part of the ownership group. That group of celebrities includes the Weeknd, Red Hot Chili Peppers members Anthony Kiedis and Flea, Calvin Harris, LL Cool J, and Adam Levine.

Other members of the celebrity-led ownership group include Ben Affleck, Tom Brady, Serena and Venus Williams, Guy Fieri, Jimmy Kimmel, Sylvester Stallone, and Conan O’Brien. O’Brien first broke the news during his TBS show on Thursday night. Watch his segment below, and see the full list of investors here.

This isn’t the first time this year musicians have had prominent roles in professional sports. Earlier this year, Billy Corgan was named the president of TNA Wrestling. Drake, an avid sports fan, coached Win Butler to an MVP award at NBA All-Star Celebrity Game in February. Butler also took part in a charity basketball game earlier this month.

Le Tigre Reunite

Le Tigre Reunite

Kathleen Hanna has revealed that Le Tigre is back in the studio together and will release a new song sometime in October. She made the announcement during a conversation with Meredith Graves (of Perfect Pussy) for the Talkhouse Music Podcast, recorded live at the Sonos store in Manhattan. Hanna said: “Le Tigre just got back together in the studio–you have the scoop–for a special song that we are going to release hopefully, like, early-to-mid-October.” She continued, “I will not say what it’s about, but it’s been really fun working with them again.” Hanna clarified later in the conversation that the band was not going to release a new record or go on tour, but would release just the new track. Watch a portion of Hanna and Graves’ discussion below. (The Le Tigre conversation begins around 15:08.)

Le Tigre hasn’t released new material since 2004’s This Island. Since 2011, Hanna has been working with Bikini Kill’s Kathi Wilcox on a project called the Julie Ruin. Earlier this year, they released a new album called Hit Reset.

During the course of their conversation Hanna and Graves also discussed G.L.O.S.S.’ recent breakup and their rejection of Epitaph Records’ $50,00 record deal. Hanna said, “In terms of a major label offer, that’s not good enough. I mean, I would turn it down ’cause it’s not good enough. It’s not worth it to, like, compromise your identity.” Hanna added, “A major label offering $50,000, to me, is a total slap in the face. A major label has tons of money. They should be able to offer a really amazing band like G.L.O.S.S. a lot more than that because it costs a lot to make an album. It costs a lot of money to master it, and what the major label’s gonna want it to sound like means that they’re gonna have to go into a different studio; they’re gonna have to work with a producer. All of that money is just going to go into producing their record, and they’re each going to end up with, like, 500 bucks? That’s not cool.” The G.L.O.S.S. discussion begins around 34:27.

“Fuck ‘Portlandia!’” Declares Real Portland Feminist Bookstore

“Fuck ‘Portlandia!’” Declares Real Portland Feminist Bookstore

One of “Portlandia”’s longest running sketches finds Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen playing characters named Toni and Candace, the owners of a feminist bookstore called Women and Women First. The segment has been shot at a real Portland nonprofit feminist bookstore called In Other Words. Following a particular messy shoot, however, the store’s staff have now disavowed “Portlandia” and discontinued their relationship with the show, as Stereogum points out.

A volunteer placed a sign in their window that reads “Fuck Portlandia!,” and they have chosen to leave it there. In a letter, they have written that the store was “left a mess, [their] staff mistreated, [their] neighbors forced to close and lose business for a day without warning, and [their] repeated attempts to obtain accountability or resolution dismissed.” In addition, In Other Words have clarified that allowing “Portlandia” to shoot has never made them a significant amount of money.

In distancing themselves from the IFC show, the In Others Words staff have criticized the show’s entire premise, as well as the Women and Women First sketch in particular. They wrote:

The Women and Women First segments that are filmed at In Other Words are trans-antagonistic and trans-misogynist and have only become more offensive as the show goes on. ‘LOL Fred Armisen in a wig and a dress’ is a deeply shitty joke whose sole punchline throws trans femmes under the bus by holding up their gender presentation for mockery and ridicule. In a world where trans femmes – particularly Black trans women – are being brutalized and murdered on a regular basis for simply daring to exist, dude in a dress jokes are lazy, reactionary, and actively harmful. They’re also just straight up not funny.

The staff have also said that the show paints an inaccurate picture of the city because “there are no Black people on ‘Portlandia.’” The store, which hosts Black Lives Matter Portland meetings, say that “Portlandia” has contributed to the city’s gentrification, “displacing the communities that made Portland a great place in the first place something twee and whimsical for the incoming technocrat hordes.”

The staff end with the clarification that neither they nor the current board and volunteers were not involved in the decision to allow “Portlandia” to shoot at their location. They also say that they “fucking love the sign.” See it below, and read the full letter here.

Watch Faith No More’s New “Cone of Shame” Video

Watch Faith No More’s New “Cone of Shame” Video

Last year, Faith No More released Sol Invictus, their first new album since 1997's Album of the Year. Now, they’ve shared a new video for the song “Cone of Shame.” Watch it below. Directed by Goce Cvetanovski, the video is a revenge thriller that makes good on the track’s title. “Cone of Shame” will be released as a limited edition 7” on November 25.

Bassist Bill Gould opened up about the video in a press release:

“This is one of those tracks that had to be a video, really, because it lends itself so much to visual imagery. Given the song’s sense of Americana, it would have been easy to shoot this in Arizona or New Mexico, but having been to Macedonia several times, there’s a vibe there that I felt wouldn’t be out of place as a backdrop to this song. Goce Cvetanovski, as a director, understood this immediately; he knew exactly what to do with it, and along with an amazing cast, has managed to create something very dark, and beautifully cinematic.”

Earlier this year, Faith No More announced plans to reissue their debut album, along with deluxe edition reissues for 1995’s King For a Day Fool For a Lifetime and 1997’s Album of the Year.

You Can Win a Sleepover at Abbey Road With Mark Ronson on Airbnb

You Can Win a Sleepover at Abbey Road With Mark Ronson on Airbnb

Abbey Road is one of the most iconic recording studios in history, counting Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Adele, Kanye West, Amy Winehouse, Stevie Wonder, and (of course) the Beatles among the artists who have recorded there. Now, Airbnb has announced a competition offering entrants an overnight stay at one of the rooms in the studio, with the winner (and up to three other guests) getting an opportunity to hang out with Mark Ronson as well. (Judging from the listing, the recording studio aspect of the space won’t be off-limits to the winner.)

The contest guidelines ask for 100-500 characters on the following prompt: which song’s recording do you most wish you’d witnessed at Abbey Road? The company’s official description of the space is not without “house rules,” which include the following: “No smoking near the Moog,” “Don’t go chasing pavements,” and, “No matter what happens, just… let it be.” Earlier this month, the company announced that people in New York could enter to win a stay at Rough Trade’s Williamsburg location.

Supreme Court to Rule on Whether Band Name “The Slants” Is Offensive

Supreme Court to Rule on Whether Band Name “The Slants” Is Offensive

Several years ago, Simon Tam of Portland, Oregon band the Slants started trying to register his all-Asian dance-rock group’s name as a trademark. However, a federal law blocks the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office from registering trademarks that may “disparage” someone or their “institutions, beliefs, or national symbols.” The patent office repeatedly rejected the band’s applications, ruling that “slants” was a disparaging term about Asians. The band, which has said it’s trying to reclaim the word, appealed to federal circuit court, and last December, the court found in Tam’s favor, striking down the part of the 1946 Lanham Act that bars disparaging trademarks. In April, the patent office asked the U.S. Supreme Court to review the case. Today, the court announced it had agreed to hear the case.

In a petition to the Supreme Court, the government argued that the trademark law didn’t limit free speech, as the Slants could keep using their name. Unusually, Tam agreed that the case should go before the Supreme Court, arguing that the law was overly vague and the name was not disparaging.

Tam’s lawyer, John Connell, in his brief to the Supreme Court, drew a comparison to the name N.W.A. “Simon Tam is not a bigot; he is fighting bigotry with the time-honored technique of seizing the bigots’ own language,” Connell wrote. “Only an uninformed philistine could find the band’s name disparaging.”

The court’s decision in the case could also affect the Washington Redskins, the football team whose trademark claim is pending in a federal circuit after being canceled in 2014. Tam has criticized the Redskins name as a racist slur. His case will be heard later in a court term that starts next week.
