Arthur Russell Archives to Be Displayed in Brooklyn Exhibit

Arthur Russell Archives to Be Displayed in Brooklyn Exhibit

Arthur Russell’s archives will be displayed at the Brooklyn Academy of Music for an exhibition called Do What I Want: The Experimental World of Arthur Russell. Presented by BAM Visual Art, Russell’s estate, and Russell’s partner Tom Lee, the exhibition will be open from March 1 to May 14 and is free to the public. The exhibition features more than 150 items, including a selection of Russell’s own notes, scores, photos, test pressings, show fliers, and album covers. There are also never-before-heard recordings from his personal working tapes.

Do What I Want will include listening stations featuring playlists spanning Russell’s discography. The playlists were compiled by Steve Knutson of Audika Records, who released much of Russell’s music. The exhibit was organized by curators Nicole Will and Jonathan Hiam.

Last year, Russell’s archives were obtained by the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. The full archive contains letters, photographs, unreleased recorded material contained on cassette tapes, VHS, reel, DATs, Beta, and more. The library has digitally archived the unreleased material with the intention to make those materials available to the public.

Coachella Website Hacked, User Data Stolen

Coachella Website Hacked, User Data Stolen

Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival has announced that information about users registered on its website (a process required to purchase tickets for the festival) has been digitally compromised. The below statement, emailed to account holders, was forwarded to Pitchfork. A representative for AEG, the company behind Coachella, confirmed that the statement is official.  “We recently discovered that unauthorized third parties illegally gained access to the usernames, first and last names, shipping addresses, email addresses, phone numbers and dates of birth individuals provided to Coachella,” an email to account holders reads. “We have confirmed that no user passwords were stolen.” The statement follows a recent Motherboard report claiming that hacked Coachella account data was being sold on the dark web.

According to the statement, an investigation found that “no financial information was accessed.” The statement also says the festival has “taken measures to block further unauthorized access” and has reported the incident to the appropriate authorities. The statement continues:

Please be aware that you may be targeted by phishing emails sent from people impersonating Coachella personnel. Please remember that Coachella will never solicit personal information or account information from you via email. Please exercise caution if you receive any emails or phone calls that ask for such information, or direct you to web sites where you are asked for personal or financial information. Festival ticketing purchase accounts were not affected by this incident, however festival attendees may want to consider changing any passwords that they have shared with others.

Minutemen, Wilco, Deerhoof Members Announce Album From New Band Big Walnuts Yonder

Minutemen, Wilco, Deerhoof Members Announce Album From New Band Big Walnuts Yonder

Big Walnuts Yonder—a new band comprised of bassist/vocalist Mike Watt (Minutemen, the Stooges), guitarist Nels Cline (Wilco, Nels Cline Singers), drummer Greg Saunier (Deerhoof), and guitarist/vocalist Nick Reinhart (Tera Melos)—have announced their debut album. The self-titled album is out May 5 via Sargent House. The first offering from the release is a new song called “Raise the Drawbridges?”—find the track, tracklist, and cover art below.

The idea for Big Walnuts Yonder began in 2008 when Watt and Reinhart toured together in Japan, later enlisting Cline who insisted Reinhart pick the drummer (Saunier). But they didn’t play any music together until six years later. The album was recorded in just three days in summer 2014 in Brooklyn, NY with former Pere Ubu bassist Tony Maimone as engineer. “It was this concentrated sort of freakout,” Saunier said of the sessions in a press release. “We basically had to invent a new band on the spot.” In 2010, Mike Watt and Nels Cline formed a new group with Yuka Honda and Dougie Bowne called Floored by Four.

04 I Got Marty Feldman Eyes

YouTube Announces Live TV Service

YouTube Announces Live TV Service

YouTube has announced a new alternative to cable or satellite television, CNBC reports. YouTube TV is a live and on-demand TV subscription service. The service will feature a DVR-style recording service with unlimited cloud storage. Subscriptions will cost $35 per month, and subscribers will have access to up to 40 networks and original content from YouTube Red. All four major networks will be included (ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC) as well as channels like ESPN, USA, FX, and more. Other channels like Showtime will be made available for an additional fee. YouTube TV does not have a set arrival date, but it’s set to launch in the U.S. within the next few months. Get notifications about the service’s launch date, and watch a demo below.

Naturally, there are gaps in the service. Viacom and Turner networks such as Comedy Central, MTV, TBS, CNN, and Cartoon Network weren’t listed in the launch announcement, The Verge points out. AMC Networks, Discovery Communications, and A+E Networks are also missing from the announcement. While Showtime is listed as an add-on premium channel, HBO is not. Hulu previously announced plans to launch a similar service.

U2 Sued for Allegedly Stealing Achtung Baby Song "The Fly"

U2 have been accused of lifting elements of their Achtung Baby song “The Fly” from English songwriter Paul Rose, Billboard reports. Rose claimed in a lawsuit filed Monday that U2, who signed to Island in 1989, heard a demo of Rose’s “Nae Slappin” while seeking inspiration for a new record. Rose’s lawsuit calls for a songwriting credit on “The Fly” and $5 million in damages and fees. “Although perhaps the most popular rock band in the world in the 1980s, by that decade's end the band felt in need of reinvigoration,” the lawsuit claims, according to Sky News. Hear the songs below.

Dev Hynes’ New Band VeilHymn Chose Name, Wrote Single as Part of MailChimp Promotion

Dev Hynes’ New Band VeilHymn Chose Name, Wrote Single as Part of MailChimp Promotion

MailChimp has a new marketing campaign where, in a series of websites and videos, they offer “experiences” that rhyme with the company’s name. As it turns out, VeilHymn—the new duo of Dev Hynes (Blood Orange) and Bryndon Cook (Starchild & The New Romantic)—is part of that campaign. (Cook is a former Pitchfork intern.) A MailChimp press release names VeilHymn alongside “MailShrimp,” “KaleLimp,” “WhaleSynth,” and more as “strategically created executions targeting digital subculture.” The duo were prompted by the company to give the project a name that rhymed with MailChimp. A representative for Hynes confirms that their single “Hymn” was created exclusively for the company. The song’s interactive video on VeilHymn.com redirects to other websites created for the MailChimp campaign.

While an Advertising Age post claimed that the duo was “created” by MailChimp and Droga5 (the ad agency behind the campaign), Hynes’ representative called that wording inaccurate and clarified that Hynes and Cook have been collaborating on music “for years.” Hynes and Cook themselves declined to comment on the story to Pitchfork.

VeilHymn and the other experiences were launched, a MailChimp press release says, “with the intention that people may organically come across one or two parts of the campaign, piquing their interest enough that they would want to dig deeper.” When the song surfaced last month, the “Hymn” SoundCloud bio and premiere post did not address the project’s affiliation with MailChimp. The song’s YouTube description and a press release for the “Hymn” video, sent to Pitchfork on February 8, didn’t mention the company. “With all of the alter egos, we wanted to play it cool at first and let them each create intrigue and interest on their own,” Mark DiCristina, the senior director of brand marketing at MailChimp, told Pitchfork via email.

“Hymn” is available to purchase as a single via Domino Records.
