R.I.P. Maggie Estep, Spoken Word Artist and Author

Maggie Estep, the writer and spoken word artist, died of a heart attack this week, EV Grieve reports and The New York Times confirms. She was 50 years old.

Estep was one of the major faces of spoken word performance in the 1990s, earning her reputation during open-mic nights in downtown New York. Her career resembled that of a musician; she played music festivals (including a stint on the Lollapalooza tour) and did television performances, most notably as part of "MTV Unplugged". She released two albums of her work: No More Mr. Nice Girl in 1994, and Love Is a Dog From Hell in 1997.

Estep has also written seven books. She was living in upstate New York at the time of her death. Watch a few of her performances below.
