Tyler, the Creator is Getting His Own Viceland Show

Vice Media’s television channel Viceland has announced that they are currently developing a new show with Tyler, the Creator, based off of a show from Tyler’s Golf Media app. Recently, Tyler changed his infamous @fucktyler Twitter handle to @tylerthecreator, citing business reasons. “My stock just went up because of that name change,” he said, explaining that he wanted to be able to contact corporations and work on bigger creative projects without making a bad first impression.

Chicago Proposal Aims to Clear Up What “Music” Means, Save Small Venues

Chicago Proposal Aims to Clear Up What “Music” Means, Save Small Venues

New legislation proposed today seeks to clear up the debate in Chicago over whether rock, rap, and electronic music count as “music” when it comes to tax laws. Cook County, the municipality that includes Chicago, has been seeking about $200,000 apiece in back taxes from two small venues in the city, Evil Olive and Beauty Bar. Under the county code, venues that hold fewer than 750 people are exempt from a 3 percent tax on admission fees for “live cultural performances,” including music. At a hearing on August 22, an administrative law judge said rock, country, rap, and DJ-based music did not necessarily constitute “music” within the scope of “fine arts” defined in the county code. The issue has drawn widespread outcry, with an editorial in The Chicago Tribune calling the debate “downright embarrassing.”

Today, Cook County commissioner John Fritchey introduced legislation to amend the County's amusement-tax ordinance, his office has announced. According to a press release sent to Pitchfork, the language of his proposed change closely mirrors the rules in the city of Chicago, which specifically includes performing DJs in its amusement-tax exemption.

“I don’t believe that government should be playing culture police and deciding what constitutes ‘music,’” Fritchey said in the release. “Going after small businesses who have in good faith complied with what should be a commonsense reading of the law is just plain wrong, and to have it happen in a city that has given the music industry some of its most famous DJs and rappers just adds insult to injury.”

Read the full announcement here.

Joe Shanahan, owner of Metro/Smart Bar, a beloved Chicago music venue, cheered the proposed ordinance amendment. “Small music venues in Chicago and Cook County serve as music incubators that provide valuable opportunities for DJs, bands, and artists of any or all genres of music to perform for audiences allowing them not only to showcase their art while also creating jobs and adding to our local economic engine,” Shanahan said in the release. “For these venues to be faced with the possibility of being penalized for reasonably believing that they were complying with the regulations is not a healthy pro-business or pro-cultural approach for a community that constantly needs to be nurtured in order to flourish and survive.”

A change to the Cook County ordinance would clarify the amusement tax exemption going forward, but it wouldn’t apply to any back taxes currently owed by venues like Evil Olive and Beauty Bar. According to the press release, Fritchey also delivered a letter to Cook County board president Toni Preckwinkle asking her to have the county’s department of revenue stop going after back taxes from venues that are exempt under the city of Chicago’s rules. “If their past activities were found to be in compliance with city policy and they paid county taxes in accordance with that policy then that should be good enough,” Fritchey said.

Fritchey intends to introduce the legislation formally when the county board of commissioners meets again on September 14.

Separately, the Chicago Reader—which first brought the issue to light earlier this month—reports today that Cook County CFO Ivan Samstein said the county had never tried to define music or art, let alone tax small venues on that basis. “We have never applied the tax different for different genres of music,” Samstein reportedly said. “Fine arts is a relative discussion. I don't think anyone [in the county] is in the business of saying what is and what is not fine arts.”

Mysterious Drake and Rihanna Website Is Fake

Mysterious Drake and Rihanna Website Is Fake

Earlier today, it appeared that Drake and Rihanna were up to something. A mysterious new website, drakeandrihanna.com, had been launched, featuring Drake’s 6 God logo (as seen on the cover of If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late), as well as a countdown clock. According to the clock, something will happen on Thursday, September 8 at 9 p.m. Eastern. However, representatives for both Drake and Rihanna have confirmed to Pitchfork that the site is not associated with either artist. Sorry, everyone.

Earlier today, the OVO Sound Twitter account tweeted “#welcometothefamily” with an image of the billboard Drake used to congratulate Rihanna on her Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award win at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night. At the VMAs, Drake presented the Video Vanguard Award to Rihanna. He said, “She’s someone I've been in love with since I was 22 years old.” The two have connected musically a number of times in the past. This year, she featured on “Too Good” on his VIEWS, and he was on ANTI’s standout “Work.”

Nicolas Jaar Launches Mysterious Radio Network

Nicolas Jaar Launches Mysterious Radio Network

Nicolas Jaar has launched a mysterious radio network. It’s a “mutation” of his subscription-based “serial label” Other People, which launched in 2013. In a statement, he writes that the label will no longer service weekly releases, and instead “concentrate on a much smaller batch of yearly releases starting in 2017.” Read Jaar’s full statement below, and check out the site here.

The site features various channels, which the user can access by typing in a number between 0 and 333. Interestingly, the only channels that work are multiples of three. (Channel 0 also works.) When the user types in a number that’s not a multiple of three, it rounds up to the nearest multiple. For example, Channel 61 becomes 63.

Each channel features unique artwork, and some station titles appear to reference his work: “Pomegranates in the sky” ties to last year’s Pomegranates, while “Aesthetic of Resistance or Resistance” alludes to the title of a book about his father’s art and work. Icons at the top of the page trigger new noises, bring up all the station names, and bring up a display indicating time spent on the site. In his statement, Jaar is coy about the platform, writing, “I will let you guys discover what this is on your own.” He does, however, recommend checking out channels 324, 195, 108, 243, 225, and 33, and ending with 333.

The new website is Jaar’s second mysterious teaser this month. Last week, the producer posted artwork on his website and social media profiles that hints at new music. His website’s metadata also included “thetrilogy.jpg,” which could possibly tie back to the multiples of three on the new other-people.network site.

Revisit our 2013 interview with Nicolas Jaar.

Nicolas Jaar statement:

Dear Opies,
First, I want to thank you for your amazing support over the past 3 years, you have allowed us to experiment and grow.
But most importantly, you’ve sustained a space for dozens of young artists from all over the world to begin or continue their paths.

Thank you
Thank you
Thank you

As some of you may have noticed, we have stopped our monthly subscription.
There are two reasons behind this decision. First of all, I will be playing live again and unable to be fully present on a week to week basis. But it’s also a financial decision: every release was a labour of love, and I took up DJing the last couple of years in part to finance the label.
We will now concentrate on a much smaller batch of yearly releases starting in 2017.
Until then, the site will mutate into http://ift.tt/2bFa90K (Chrome preferred)
I will let you guys discover what this is on your own but all I’ll say is that channels 324, 195, 108, 243, 225, 33 would be good places to start..
And channel 333 will be a good place to end. :)
Okay that’s all, see you on the road.

Love,
N

Lightning Strikes Berghain

Lightning Strikes Berghain

Lightning struck legendary Berlin nightclub Berghain over the weekend, triggering a series of technical failures, according to various reports (via Resident Advisor). Barker, whose duo Barker & Baumecker is signed to Berghain’s in-house label Ostgut Ton, tweeted that “blinding bright emergency lighting” came on for three hours but “nobody left the dancefloor, it just felt like a never ending breakdown.” DJ T., who was playing upstairs at the Panorama Bar, wrote on Facebook that “the sound went off for minutes, the air condition shut down completely, as almost all lights at the bar did. People took off their clothes because the place became a sauna, never saw so many topless girls and boys in a club.” Representatives for Dax J and Pär Grindvik, who played downstairs, have confirmed the lightning strike occurred. London Mayor Urges Local Council to Save Fabric Nightclub

London Mayor Urges Local Council to Save Fabric Nightclub

London mayor Sadiq Khan has responded to a petition rallying support for London nightclub fabric, as Mixmag points out. The club closed voluntarily this month after two 18-year-old attendees died of drug overdoses in the space of nine weeks. Its license was then suspended and put up for review. The petition, which has reached nearly 100,000 signatures, highlighted Khan’s pledge to save London’s night economy. In his response, Khan touted the city’s “iconic” clubs, noted his imminent appointment of a night czar, and said, “I am committed to using the influence of my office to overcome the numerous challenges facing the night time economy.” He also stressed he sees a need for “real action” to protect clubbers’ safety, citing a critical report of the nightclub’s security, and added that his office can’t directly intervene in licensing cases.

In conclusion, Khan wrote:

My team have spoken to all involved in the current situation and I am urging them to find a common sense solution that ensures the club remains open while protecting the safety of those who want to enjoy London’s clubbing scene.

James Corden Inserts Himself Into Kanye’s “Fade” Video: Watch

James Corden Inserts Himself Into Kanye’s “Fade” Video: Watch

In the aftermath of the MTV VMAs, the late night talk show hosts spent time during their monologues to joke about what happened at the show. Specifically, hosts singled out Kanye West’s new “Fade” video—the Teyana Taylor-starring clip that ends with Taylor transforming into a cat woman. On “The Late Late Show,” James Corden edited himself into the video. While trying to exercise in the same space as Taylor, he takes issue with how she sprawls across the gym. “Can you dial it down a little bit,” he said. “It feels like you’re ramping up, if anything.” He also has a problem with how much oil she’s slinging around and points out the gym’s “zero sheep policy.”

Earlier in the night on CBS, Stephen Colbert joked about the video in his “Late Show” monologue. He quipped that he hoped Taylor knew to wipe down the equipment in that gym after she was finished. He also described the video’s ending as what would happen if you took peyote and watched episodes of “Thundercats.”
