Basilica SoundScape Adds Godspeed You! Black Emperor Pre-Festival Show and More

Basilica SoundScape will return to Basilica Hudson in Hudson, New York from September 11-13.

Today, we're happy to announce that Godspeed You! Black Emperor will perform a pre-festival show on Tuesday, September 8 at Basilica Hudson. Tickets are available for $20 in advance and $25 at the door for the show. Advance ticket purchasers can buy weekend passes for Basilica SoundScape for the discounted price of $60. Two more acts have also been added to the main festival lineup: Sannhet and the all-drummer Triangle Trio (Chris Corsano, Otto Hauser, and Ryan Sawyer).  They join Perfume Genius, Haxan Cloak, Wolf Eyes, Blanck Mass (Fuck Buttons' Benjamin John Power), HEALTH, Viet Cong, Actress, Jenny Hval, Weyes Blood, Circuit des Yeux, and tabla/sitar musicians Gourisankar and Indrajit Banerjee. 

In addition to the music, Basilica SoundScape will also feature readings by Holly Anderson (with Chris Brokaw of Codeine and Come), Dorothea Lasky, Sarah Jean Alexander, and Ariana Reines. Contemporary artist Dan Colen will present a series of new large-scale paintings. The Basilica Back Gallery will feature an exhibit called "The Now Forever" featuring work by Harmony Korine, Nate Lowman, Alex McQuilkin, and more. There will also be a Sunday brunch, a marketplace with handmade goods and farm fresh foods, and more.

Miguel Shares "NWA" Video

Back in June, Miguel shared Wildheart Chapter 1: Find What You Love And Let It Kill You, an extended video for Wildheart cuts "...goingtohell", "Coffee", and "NWA". Today, he shared the "NWA" portion as a standalone clip. It features Miguel walking through the streets, as Kurupt (who guests on the song) shows up to rap from a car. Dr. Dre Releasing N.W.A. Film-Inspired Album This Week, Ice Cube Says

The N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton comes out August 14. In a new interview with Philadelphia radio station Power 99 (pointed out by Consequence of Sound), Ice Cube said that Dr. Dre is dropping a new album inspired by the film this Saturday, August 1.

"It’s mega, you know, it’s Dr. Dre, it’s what everybody been waiting for," Ice Cube said. “It’s definitely a dope record, and he’s dropping it all on the same day. It's crazy."

Earlier this month, director F. Gary Gary told MTV that Dre had enlisted Kendrick Lamar and Eminem for the film's soundtrack. It's unclear if the soundtrack and the Dre album are the same release.

In the Power 99 interview, Cube also talked about the rumored N.W.A. reunion tour. "Yeah, there's a possibility for sure," he said. "We've definitely been talking about it. It's just really about promotors coming to the table and we put together something that works for everybody. It's definitely, definitely possible.

The Chills Announce First Album in 19 Years, Share "America Says Hello"

The Chills—the Dunedin, New Zealand-based band whose early records were released by Flying Nun—haven't put out a full-length since 1996's Sunburnt. (In 2004, they put out a mini-album, Stand By, and in 2014, a single and a tour EP.) Their next LP, Silver Bullets, arrives on October 30 via Fire. Listen to "America Says Hello" above.

The album also features "Molten Gold", which was released two years ago.

For this album, Chills main man Martin Phillipps is joined by James Dickson, Todd Knudson, Erica Stichbury, and Oli Wilson. While Phillipps is set to play solo shows later this year, a full band tour is in the works for next year. The album was recorded at Albany Street Studios in Dunedin.

Kendrick Lamar's "Alright" Chanted by Protesters During Cleveland Police Altercation

On Sunday, protesters in Cleveland were filmed chanting Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly cut "Alright" during an altercation with police, as FACT points out. You can watch footage below.

As ABC 5 Cleveland reports, attendees of a Black Lives Matter conference at Cleveland State University confronted transit authority police arresting a 14-year-old for allegedly being intoxicated on a bus. After the crowd blocked the street so that the police cruiser couldn't leave, the police responded by using pepper spray.

The police released a statement saying the 14-year old was treated by an EMS unit and later released to the custody of his mother, according to ABC 5 Cleveland.

In June, Kendrick performed "Alright" at the BET Awards while standing on a vandalized cop car. After Fox News pundits claimed the performance "incites violence", Kendrick responded, "How can you take a song that's about hope and turn it into hatred?"

Unknown Mortal Orchestra Share Kaleidoscopic "Ur Life One Night" Video

Unknown Mortal Orchestra have shared the video for "Ur Life One Night", taken from this year's album Multi-Love. Directed by Manoj Leonel Jahson, the fantastical video uses the romantic misadventures of a goddess as inspiration for an elaborate, lightning-struck tapestry. Watch it below via Rolling Stone.

"The visual language naturally led to borrowing heavily from Traditional Asian Art, including miniature paintings from the Mughal period to create multiple dreamscapes, and ended up being a sexually charged riot with a fair dose of humor and symbolism," Jahson told Rolling Stone, "

Neil Young Removes Majority of His Music From Streaming Services

Earlier this month, Neil Young said he intended to remove his music from streaming services. "I don't need my music to be devalued by the worst quality in the history of broadcasting or any other form of distribution," he wrote. As of today, it appears that Young has made good on his promises, as Variety reports (via Rolling Stone). The majority of his albums and songs have disappeared from streaming services like Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, and Rdio.

There are some exceptions. The albums that Young produced in the 1980s for Geffen Records—1982's Trans, 1983's Everybody's Rockin', 1985's Old Ways, 1986's Landing on Water and 1987's Life—are still available. Young was famously embroiled in a legal dispute with Geffen over the release of these albums, which the label said weren't "musically characteristic" of his sound. But for the most part, his music is gone—a big bummer if you were looking for a "Harvest Moon" fix to get through the day.

Previously, Young indicated that he'd reconsider the decision to remove his music should the audio quality improve. "When the quality is back, I'll give it another look," he wrote. "Never say never." For now, Young enthusiasts might want to think about embracing Pono.

Grimes Pens Love Letter to Star Wars

Grimes has penned a love letter to the Star Wars franchise in the new issue of LOVE magazine. In the text (reproduced by NME), Claire Boucher praises the series' visual innovations ("they smeared peanut butter on lenses to make the cars look like they were floating"), costuming ("Chewie definitely seems like an actor in a suit, which I find less jarring than a CGI character"), casting ("Gwendolyn Christie and Lupita Nyong’o are two of my favourite actresses, and neither made her name doing something overtly feminine or sexualised"), and droid characters: "C-3PO has always been a personal favourite of mine. I really relate to his fear of death".

Speaking about the droids, she concludes:

Rewatching the movies as an adult, C-3PO’s stuttering humanity is a great foil for the violence and intensity of the films. Almost any scary or violent scene is mitigated by a worried awkward robot complaining about safety. And, as with Artoo, you are never really sure of C-3PO is male or female – and with programming he or she could really be any age. There’s a lot of room for the audience to project onto either droid, which is probably another reason why the films have such broad appeal.

Foals Share Virtual Reality Video for "Mountain at My Gates", Directed by Nabil

Foals are lining up their new album What Went Down, the follow-up to 2013's Holy Fire. Today, they've shared a video for "Mountain at My Gates". Directed by longtime collaborator Nabil, it's the first music video to be filmed using GoPro's new Spherical virtual reality technology. Viewers using Google Chrome or the YouTube phone app can interact with the content using a mouse or the A/W/S/D keys. Check it out below.

Drake Shares Another Meek Mill Response, "Back to Back Freestyle"

On last Saturday's installment of "OVO Sound Radio", Drake premiered "Charged Up", his response to Meek Mill's claim Drake used a ghostwriter for his verse on "R.I.C.O." from Meek's new album Dreams Worth More Than Money. Today, following a 15-second response from Meek yesterday, Drake has shared another diss track via Twitter, called "Back to Back Fresstyle". 

Referring to Meek's current spot on Nicki Minaj's "Pinkprint Tour", Drake raps, “You love her then you gotta get a world tour/ Is that a world tour or your girl’s tour?/ I know that you gotta be a thug for her/ This ain’t what she meant when she told you to open up more.” Hear the full track above.

The song came accompanied by a photo of Toronto Blue Jay Joe Carter's walk-off home-run in the 1993 World Series.

Twin Shadow Shares Mixtape of 2010-14 Demos

Today, Twin Shadow shared a gift to his fans—a mixtape collecting some of his demos between 2010 and 2014. It's called Night Rally, and it's available both as a free download and as a tour-only cassette. Download it here and find the tracklist below.

Fiona Apple Sings "When I Get Low, I Get High" With Watkins Family Hour

Siblings Sean and Sara Watkins are in Nickel Creek, but they also host a monthly residency called the Watkins Family Hour. This summer, they released a self-titled album featuring Fiona Apple. Apple and the band played a show in Newport on Thursday to kick off the Newport Folk Festival, and as Stereogum points out, video from that set has surfaced. Watch them cover "When I Get Low, I Get High"—a song popularized by Ella Fitzgerald—below.

Kanye West Did Not "Storm Off," Cut Pan Am Games Performance Short

Kanye West performed during the closing ceremony of the Pan American Games in Toronto. Following the set, a few news stories were published claiming that he "stormed off" and "abruptly cut his performance short" due to his frustration with technical difficulties. Pan Am have released a statement to clarify that West didn't cut his performance short or, in their opinion, behave unprofessionally.

Here's the statement from Pan Am representative Neala Barton:

"As this was a live broadcast, Kanye West was always scheduled to perform for 13 minutes. He fulfilled this commitment in great style and while there was technical difficulty at the end due to circumstances beyond anyone's control, he rolled with it the way great artists do. To imply that he abruptly cut short his performance or that he was anything less than professional is incorrect. We could not have been more thrilled."

So yes, West threw the mic in the air and walked off stage following some technical difficulties, but apparently, that performance was already over. Watch footage of the incident below via Jezebel.

Grimes Discusses New Album

Grimes is on the cover of the latest issue of Fader. In the cover story, Claire Boucher discusses the creation of her new album (which she has said will arrive in October) and some of the ideas that informed its songs. She also clarifies that whole "Grimes scraps album" narrative.

The entire feature is well worth a read. In it, she discusses the creation and aftermath of Visions, her at-home dynamic with James Brooks, life in Los Angeles, her experience writing for other artists, the exhaustion that comes with extensive touring, and the music industry's intrinsic sexism. 

Boucher says the new album comes from a different emotional place from her previous work.

“They’re not all diss tracks, but there’s a lot of diss tracks. ... I think all my other albums were, like, sad. And this time it’s more happy and angry. I live in my own house that I pay for. I bought all this equipment myself. I control my own life now. No one has any say over what I do or where I go or when I do it.”

Here's what we know about the album:

• There's a song called "Flesh Without Blood".
• She wrote a "diss track about male producers," which is "about a guy who acts like he knows everything and then comes back crawling on his knees, which has happened to me so many times."
• One song is about being "too scary to be objectified" and will feature three female emcees.
• She learned to play and self-recorded guitar, drums, keys, ukulele, and violin.
• She tracked most of the album at home, though for vocals, she shared a studio with Blood Diamonds (who was working on his own music).

Boucher also says she's planning on adopting additional alter egos aside from Grimes. One of them is "Screechy Bat"—the "metal one".

She clarifies that she didn't scrap an entire finished album and dispels the myth that she from scratch after fans reacted negatively to "Go". "There were just hundreds of songs," she said. "On this album that I’m making now, there’s at least a hundred songs that won’t make it onto this. I think all musicians have songs that don’t make it onto records."
