NXNE Defends Action Bronson Against Accusations He "Glorifies Gang-Raping and Murdering Women"

NXNE Defends Action Bronson Against Accusations He "Glorifies Gang-Raping and Murdering Women"

Action Bronson is slated to play a NXNE festival event at Yonge-Dundas Square in Toronto on June 21. Yesterday, a woman named Erica Shiner launched a Change.org petition to bar the New York rapper from performing at the event, saying that he "glorifies gang-raping and murdering women."

She cited lyrics from his 2011 song "Consensual Rape", calling them "hate speech", and his 2011 video for "Brunch", "in which the artist cooks a meal over a woman's dead body, rolls her up in a carpet, throws her in his trunk, and proceeds to violently stab her when he discovers she's still alive (trigger warning, obviously)."

Shiner wrote, "A musician who glorifies rape and violence against women should never be allowed to perform at a public space in our city." So far, over 1,600 supporters have signed the petition.

Now, the organizers of NXNE have issued a statement addressing the petition, defending the artist and confirming that his set will go on as scheduled. "NXNE believes each and every one of these artists have the right to express their views through music, but those views belong to them and them alone,” the statement reads. “Those who are offended by an artist are invited to check out other Festival showcases, as NXNE will present hundreds of artists this June – some may be considered controversial, but most are just plain fun.” Check out the full statement below.

Here are the "Consensual Rape" lyrics cited by the petition:

Then dig your shorty out cuz I geeked her up on molly
Have her eating dick, no need for seasoning
If seven dudes are in the room then she's pleasing them
Like a trooper. Hit her in the pooper. Throw her in the shower, then I take her out to Lupa
I'm kinky, I'll hit it even if it's stinky

Put em in the shower, make the pussy brand new
Ran through.

Give 'em money what I can't do
Stuff her lunchbox & burn her with the candle

Here's NXNE's statement in full:

On Tuesday, May 26 a group of concerned Torontonians created a petition to remove Action Bronson from NXNE’s lineup on Sunday, June 21 at Yonge-Dundas Square. The petition has spawned a passionate online discussion. The Festival would like to address this topic.

Action Bronson performed at Yonge-Dundas Square as part of NXNE in 2012 with Killer Mike, Raekwon and Ghostface Killah. It was a positive concert that was described by reviewers as “laid back”, “a lot of fun” and a “world class hip-hop showcase”. NXNE is confident the lineup on June 21 at Yonge-Dundas Square will make for another enjoyable day of music in a public space.

“NXNE will also present a number of rap artists at various venues, such as Tink and Kate Tempest, who have be lauded for the undisguised feminist viewpoints in their music.” says Sara Peel, Managing Director of NXNE. ” “That being said, in the interest of moving forward in a positive manner, we are engaging in discussion with our community about this important issue, and looking to provide opportunities for concerned voices to be heard.”

NXNE believes each and every one of these artists have the right to express their views through music, but those views belong to them and them alone. Those who are offended by an artist are invited to check out other Festival showcases, as NXNE will present hundreds of artists this June – some may be considered controversial, but most are just plain fun.

Meanwhile, a Bronson defender named James Fricke has launched a counter-petition urging fans to "stop feminist extremeists [sic] from censoring Action Bronson's free speech and his performance at NXNE." It offers an alternate interpretation of the lyrics in question:

Erica Shiner and her parteners [sic] either knowingly or unknowingly manipulated the meaning of the lyrics do [to] describe the non-consensual drugging and gang raping of the woman in the lyrics, based on the single line ‘cuz I geeked her up on molly’. This is a loose play of language to describe his giving her molly, and her willingly taking it.

Mikal Cronin Pays Tribute to Paul Simon's "You Can Call Me Al" in His "Say" Video

Mikal Cronin Pays Tribute to Paul Simon's "You Can Call Me Al" in His "Say" Video

In Mikal Cronin's last MCIII video, for "Turn Around", comedians Kristen Schaal, Paul Scheer, and Kurt Braunohler remade Natalie Imbruglia's "Torn". In the new clip for "Say", he continues with the goofs.

Directed by Jonah Ray, it's a dark tribute to Paul Simon's "You Can Call Me Al" video, except this time there are way too many Chevy Chases to go around... and things get dark. Watch it below via Funny or Die. In addition to Cronin and Ray, the video also stars Braunohler, Nick Thune, Nelson Franklin, and more.

Here's what Ray had to say about the video:

When my friend Mikal Cronin approached me about doing a video parody of Paul Simon’s “You Can Call Me Al” and said that I would be playing the part of Chevy, I stopped him right there. I said, “Mikal, my dear sweet acquaintance, I alone cannot play ‘the Chevy,’ as we are all ‘the Chevy.’ He is the light, the love, the Fletch.” That’s when Mikal broke down in tears over the phone. I laughed at him and said, “It’ll be okay young, dumb, silly Mikal… It’ll be okay.”

Feist, Vanessa Bayer, Fred Armisen, Zosia Mamet Make Fun of Jenny Lewis' Child Star Days in "She's Not Me" Video

Here's the video for "She's Not Me", from last year's Jenny Lewis album The Voyager. It's a playful revisitation of Lewis' career as a child actor that also stars Feist, "Saturday Night Live"'s Vanessa Bayer, "Girls"' Zosia Mamet, Fred Armisen, and Kids' Leo Fitzpatrick.

The video references all of the big highlights of Lewis' cinematic CV: Troop Beverly HillsPleasantville (Feist shows up as a priest), even the 80s video-game movie The Wizard, the poster of which gets recreated. There's also a scene in which Lewis visits with "The Gilded Gals": Mamet, Bayer, and Armisen. Watch the video below via Buzzfeed.

Yesterday, the latest episode of Bayer's comedy series "Sound Advice" was posted, featuring Lewis discussing Troop Beverly Hills, among other things.

PacSun Pulls A$AP Rocky Upside-Down Flag T-Shirt From Stores

PacSun Pulls A$AP Rocky Upside-Down Flag T-Shirt From Stores

PacSun has pulled a T-shirt that was designed in collaboration with A$AP Rocky, USA Today reports. It featured an upside-down American flag. On Memorial Day, the company's Facebook page was inundated with comments calling the shirt "disrespectful" (among other things). The company issued this apology:

As a retailer grounded in youth culture, PacSun values artistic and creative expression through the brands that we sell in our stores. Out of respect for those who have put their lives on the line for our country, we have decided to stop selling the licensed flag t-shirt and are removing it from our stores and website immediately. We thank the men and women in uniform for their extraordinary service.

Flag code dictates that an upside-down flag should only be displayed as "a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property."

The upside-down flag has been part of Rocky's aesthetic for some time now. It was a fixture of his stage set in 2012.

Third Man Records Clarifies Jack White's Touring Break, Relationship With Meg White, Tidal, More

Third Man Records Clarifies Jack White's Touring Break, Relationship With Meg White, Tidal, More

This past weekend, Jack White held a Q&A with members of Third Man Records' Vault, an online community hosted on the label's website. White answered questions about his relationship with former White Stripes bandmate Meg White, his future touring plans (or lack thereof), click-bait headlines, and more.

Now, Third Man has issued a statement via Facebook in an attempt to clear up misconceptions regarding White's answers in the Q&A. Read the whole thing here.

In response to questions about the status of his relationship with former partner Meg White, in the Q&A, White wrote that "she doesn’t answer her phone," later adding that "that time is gone."

Third Man now clarifies:

She doesn’t have to answer her phone. He’s not even complaining about that nor is it depressing. The White Stripes is over and it’s been said a hundred times, and maybe that’s just the quickest way for him to answer that question he gets asked a dozen times a day. Jack loves Meg, and she’s an incredible drummer - nobody can do what she does and did with the White Stripes- but those days are unfortunately gone. Let’s move on, Jack and Meg have. And in the meantime we’re still selling their records (WINK!).

White also made reference during the Q&A to taking a break from the road following his extensive tour behind last year's Lazaretto. (Earlier this year, it was announced that he would be "taking a break from performing live for a long period of time.") Third Man said:

Never touring again - He never said that, but he IS taking a long break from the road (which was previously announced and discussed drama free over a month ago). He said he’d like to do acoustic shows in sit down venues and electric shows in standing venues. He said he doesn’t like festivals but hey, he does them anyway and he makes them work. Bonnaroo and Coachella were two of the greatest shows he’s ever been a part of (hell, we released his Bonnaroo set as a Vault release cause we loved it so much). He is not quitting music. He’s working with the Dead Weather next week, he’s involved in several projects we’re not even gonna tell you about right now cause we don’t want to ruin the surprise.

The Third Man Facebook post also referenced White's recent Tidal Q&A and "music is sacred" poem:

The poem he wrote and we posted the other day… it's part of a larger idea that has nothing to do with music streaming and more to do with our ongoing efforts spread the love language, music and equal respect for all modes of art. Jack is for artists and Third Man does what we can when we can to help them out. That’s our heart and soul right there. Whether it’s printing obscure records or trying to get struggling musicians paid in some way, or bringing attention to writers and poets and film that we love and respect that’s what we’ll always be for.

Lastly, Jack is a guy who just did a tour charging $3 for a ticket price. How are we getting him mixed up with someone who’s ‘just in it for the money’? Everything we do at Third Man is a bad business move! But we do it because we love, music, and art and making new beautiful things exist that previously did not.
