Vince Staples, YG, Joey Bada$$, Mac Miller Irving Plaza Shows Canceled Following Shooting

Vince Staples, YG, Joey Bada$$, Mac Miller Irving Plaza Shows Canceled Following Shooting

Last week, four people were injured in a fatal shooting at T.I.’s Irving Plaza concert in New York. As a result, several upcoming concerts at Irving Plaza and the Gramercy Theatre have been either postponed or canceled. Among the affected concerts are shows featuring Vince Staples (June 4), Joey Bada$$ (June 2), YG (June 6), and Mac Miller (June 3), Rolling Stone reports. “In light of last week's tragic event, we are acting with an overabundance of caution and coordinating a going forward strategy with the New York Police Department that may also include a curfew,” a spokesperson for Irving Plaza and Gramercy Theatre told Rolling Stone, who explained that the postponements are happening because discussions with the NYPD are “ongoing.” Representatives for YG, Miller, and Joey declined to comment. Staples' representative has yet to respond to Pitchfork's request for comment.

Rapper Troy Ave, whose real name is Roland Collins, was shot in the leg during the incident and subsequently arrested in connection to the shooting. He was formally charged with attempted murder and criminal possession of a weapon, The New York Times reports. The rapper pleaded not guilty to all charges. “[Troy Ave is] the real victim here,” Troy Ave's lawyer Scott E. Leemon told the court, arguing that the rapper was acting in self-defense.

M.I.A. Shares New Song “Poc That Still a Ryda”: Listen

Earlier today, M.I.A. took to Periscope to answer questions and air her ongoing U.S. visa woes. (Immigration and human rights lawyers are getting involved, she said.) She also announced the imminent release of new music, which she's now shared. "Poc That Still a Ryda" is a new song she described as "a mix of all the songs on my upcoming Lp." She added: "had to do a remix to let u know , i been poor , i been rich , i been brown , i been black , i seen white and i been around the world a few times ay ay ay ay . LOVE IS THE ANSWER what the question is i don't fucking know."

Earlier this year, M.I.A. tweeted that she was handing her "last LP" to her American label. She added that the record would be out in "July. Summertime." In recent months, she's shared "Rewear It," as a part of an H&M campaign, "MIA OLA," "Foreign Friend," and "Temple," a collaboration with Baauer and BIGBANG frontman G-Dragon. She recently previewed a new song saying she wanted to leak the album. M.I.A.'s last LP was 2013's Matangi.

During the broadcast, M.I.A. also said she plans to tour the U.K. next year.

Thurston Moore Announces Collaboration With Bernie Sanders

Thurston Moore Announces Collaboration With Bernie Sanders

Joyful Noise Recordings has announced a special collaboration between Thurston Moore and Bernie Sanders titled "Feel It in Your Guts." It's a twelve-string acoustic composition mixed in with snippets of Sander's speeches, which touch "on topics like the worship of money, economic inequality, social justice, and the need for basic human rights for all people," according to Joyful Noise. "Feel It in Your Guts" will be released as limited edition run of 1000 hand numbered white flexi-disc vinyl and digital download. The single will be given away for free, but only if you make a direct contribution to the Sanders campaign. Joyful Noise suggests a donation of twenty-seven dollars. Check out the album art by David Kloc below.

Karl Hofstetter of Joyful Noise shared how the collaboration came about in a press release:

Bernie Sanders inspires us. In a political and business climate which is increasingly self-interested and money-driven, Bernie Sanders alone remains uncompromisingly focused on the issues that affect 99% of us. Which is to say, he’s talking about the things that will improve the lives of ourselves, our families, and basically everyone we have ever met. As the only presidential candidate who refuses bribes from big business, his agenda is unswervingly focused on the people over special interests. As Bernie himself has said, “The reason why we are doing well in this campaign is because we are telling the truth.”

We at the label were inspired to support the campaign, and we thought it would be best to use our curatorial talents to this end. Being a weird-o indie rock record label, we are fortunate to work with a variety of incredible musicians; including, on occasion, the great Thurston Moore. So we decided to ask him. And we were delighted that in a matter of minutes after posing the idea, Thurston excitedly agreed.

Next: the task of getting a major presidential candidate involved. Fortunately, one of our employees was already friends with the good folks of the Bernie campaign, so we reached out. Amazingly, the Bernie campaign responded, and within a week or so, we heard that Bernie himself was into the idea. The amazing folks at the Bernie campaign have worked closely with us to make this crazy collaboration a reality.

Zulu Nation Apologizes to Afrika Bambaataa's Alleged Sexual Abuse Victims

Zulu Nation Apologizes to Afrika Bambaataa's Alleged Sexual Abuse Victims

Zulu Nation, an organization found in the 1970s by Afrika Bambaataa, has changed its stance on recent sexual abuse allegations against the hip-hop pioneer, the New York Daily News reports. In April, Ronald Savage—a Bronx activist, politician, and former music industry executive—went public with accusations that Bambaataa sexually abused him several times in 1980, when Savage was 15 years old. Bambaataa’s lawyer issued a statement calling the charges “defamatory” and “false.” Bambaataa, in a statement, said he wanted “to personally deny any and all allegations of any type of sexual molestation of anyone.” Three other men have since accused Bambaataa of sexual abuse. Bambaataa, in his first interview since the allegations, again denied them, suggesting the claims were part of an effort to damage his reputation. Zulu Nation originally denied Savage's claims, calling him “mentally challenged” and suggesting the Daily News had “been compromised and controlled by U.S. government intelligence.” In May, though, Zulu Nation announced a change in leadership. And now the hip-hop awareness group has issued an apology to Bambaataa’s alleged sexual abuse victims.

“We extend our deepest and most sincere apologies to the many people who have been hurt by the actions of Afrika Bambaataa and the subsequent poor response of our organization to allegations leveled against him,” Zulu Nation said on May 31 in a statement, as the Daily News reports. Zulu King EL One, the organization’s New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut coordinator, reportedly said that older leaders who were Bambaataa’s friends had given the earlier statements. “Most of the membership would like to hear what the victims have to say,” Zulu King EL One told the Daily News.

Charles Tucker Jr., an attorney for Bambaataa, declined to comment to the Daily News. ”I don’t know enough about the motivation behind this letter to make a statement,” Tucker said.

Two Dead at Sunset Music Festival in Tampa

Two Dead at Sunset Music Festival in Tampa

Two people have died after attending the Sunset Music Festival in Tampa, Florida, the Tampa Bay Times reports (via Stereogum). The deceased are a 22-year-old man from Melbourne, Australia, and a 21-year-old woman from Kissimmee, Florida. Cause of death has not yet been revealed, but Tampa police spokesman Steve Hegarty has said the police believe the deaths “are related to the Sunset Music Festival,” which took place May 28 and 29 at Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium. In addition, police say 57 festival attendees were taken to the hospital during the event. A spokesperson for St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa told WFLA the number of people coming in for drug overdoses was “frightening.”

In a statement to WFLA, Sunset organizers said:

The health, safety and welfare of our fans and community is Sunset Music Festival’s first priority and we take every measure to create a safe environment at our events. Any loss of life is a tragedy and we extend our deepest heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of those affected. Due to the ongoing investigation by the medical examiner’s office, Sunset will not issue additional comments at this time.

In their statement, the Tampa Sports Authority, which manages Raymond James Stadium, said:

We have received this information as you have through the Tampa Police Department’s release. We extend our condolences to these families for their loss. We will continue to work with the promoters of the Sunset Music Festival and local life safety agencies to provide the safest environment possible for their attendees.
