Former Dirty Projectors member Amber Coffman has shared the full details for her upcoming debut solo album, City of No Reply, which is out June 2 via Columbia. The album includes the previously released “All to Myself” and “No Coffee.” It was produced and written by Coffman alongside Dave Longstreth, who recorded it in his Los Angeles studio in 2015. Find the full tracklist and artwork below. Coffman has also shared the video for “No Coffee,” directed by Zia Anger (who has directed videos for Jenny Hval, Maggie Rogers, Angel Olsen, and more). In the clip, Coffman can be seen dancing in a pastel-colored office with a man wearing an eagle costume. Watch below. In a statement, Coffman explained her thinking behind the playful visual:
The video is a bit of a commentary on the American Dream, which I think informs a lot of our romantic endeavors, and often times in a not-so-healthy or fulfilling way. I don’t believe it’s possible to be truly happy if you just sort of accept patriarchy and capitalism as the foundation and try to just casually live with that. It gnaws at us all from the inside and the only way to evolve beyond its destructiveness is to challenge that in some way, actively or internally.
In March, Coffman opened up about her breakup with Longstreth and leaving Dirty Projectors, calling it “the only healthy choice.” “It was never my intention or wish to leave the band or end my friendship with Dave,” she said. “It was a surprise to me to learn last September about his album plans, the content, timing, use of the band name, etc....” adding, “I’m really proud of the album I made and my hope is that people will listen to it on its own terms.”
Since the release of Dirty Projectors’ Swing Lo Magellan, Coffman has collaborated with Major Lazer, Snoop Lion, J. Cole, and RiFF RAFF. Last year, she made an appearance on Frank Ocean’s Blonde.
