Last night at their Seattle benefit show, Death Cab For Cutie paid tribute to Chris Cornell by covering Soundgarden’s “Fell On Black Days.” They join a slew of other bands who have memorialized Cornell live, including Guns N’ Roses, Ryan Adams, Metallica, Megadeth, and others. Before launching into the song, Death Cab’s Ben Gibbard shared a few words about Cornell: “What an unbelievable talent he was, what fucking insane singer he is.” Check out the footage below. On May 18, Cornell was found dead in his Detroit hotel room. In the wake of his passing, Gibbard shared a note on his Facebook remembering Cornell, calling him “the most sophisticated lyricist of his Seattle contemporaries.”
Death Cab for Cutie and the Decemberists both performed last night’s benefit concert, with proceeds going towards the American Civil Liberties Union and Planned Parenthood. Late last year, Death Cab issued a statement that their “shows will always be a safe place.” Death Cab’s last album Kintsugi was released in 2015.
