Yesterday, Lorde released “Perfect Places,” the excellent closing track from her forthcoming sophomore album Melodrama. She’s now annotated some of the song’s lyrics on Genius. Among other revelations, she confirms that the line “All of our heroes fading” is about David Bowie and Prince. “I felt the loss of Prince and DB hard last year. A massive light went out,” she explains. Lorde also writes that the track “started coming together late summer of 2016 in New York” when it was hot outside and “the news was just horrific every day.” The combination inspired the line “I hate the headlines and the weather,” which she calls “the most Melodrama line on the whole album.”
A couple months later, in November 2016, Lorde says she penned the line “Watch the wasters blow the speakers.” The next month, she ended up doing just that when she and a friend DJ’d a party: “We had this crazy room going then blew the speakers spectacularly and ghosted out of there. So yeah. Kind of about me. I’m a mess.” Find all of Lorde’s Genius annotations here.
Melodrama is out June 16 via LAVA/Republic. In addition to “Perfect Places,” Lorde has shared the songs “Green Light” and “Liability.” Read Pitchfork’s interview with “Green Light” video director Grant Singer.
