In support of her new book From Cradle to Stage: Stories From the Mothers Who Rocked and Raised Rock Stars, Virginia Hanlon Grohl and her son Dave Grohl appeared on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.” During the adorable interview, Mrs. Grohl shares an incredible photo of her son at a tender age, and Colbert reads Dave’s sixth grade report card out loud while he grows increasingly uncomfortable. Elsewhere, Dave tells some formative stories about his childhood, and his mother talks about their relationship in the wake of Kurt Cobain’s death. In addition, Dave Grohl joined the Preservation Hall Jazz Band (who were sitting in with “Colbert” house band Jon Batiste and Stay Human) to perform “Santiago.” Watch it all go down below.
From Cradle to Stage—which features Virginia Hanlon Grohl’s interviews with the mothers of famous musicians including Dr. Dre, Amy Winehouse, Haim, and Michael Stipe—is out now. For more insight into Dave Grohl’s childhood, revisit a clip of him reacting to his teenage rock band.
