Kill Rock Stars is celebrating the 20th anniversary of Elliott Smith’s Either/Or with an expanded edition reissue of the record. Continuing the commemoration, the label is now partnering with Sean Cannon’s “The Guestlist” for a new series called “Say Yes: An Elliott Smith Podcast.” The miniseries features conversations with those who knew Smith and those who were influenced by him, along with talks about the album itself. It also includes a previously unreleased interview with Elliott Smith from 1998. Below, hear the first episode, which features Sadie Dupuis (Speedy Ortiz), Jessica Lea Mayfield, and Kevin Devine.
Among the many guests on “Say Yes” are: Jack Black, Ben Gibbard, Good Will Hunting director Gus Van Sant, Anderson Cooper, Regina Spektor, the Strokes’ Albert Hammond Jr., the Flaming Lips, Jesca Hoop, Open Mike Eagle, Lance Bangs, and Matthew Caws of Nada Surf. Pitchfork Senior Editor Jayson Greene, who put together a 2013 oral history of Smith's life and career, is also featured. New episodes go live on the podcast feed on Fridays at 8 a.m. Eastern.
Either/Or: Expanded Edition is out March 10. It includes previously unheard tracks (like “I Figured You Out”) and live versions of album cuts (like “Angeles,” recorded at YoYo A Go Go).
