In August, seemingly out of the blue, Smash Mouth told Car Seat Headrest that “Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales” (from Teens of Denial) was “One of the best songs of 2016 point blank!” CSH were receptive to the compliment. Months later, a fan suggested that the two bands work together on an EP, where they cover each others’ songs. Smash Mouth said they’re “game,” and CSH responded, “let’s make it happen!” Now, CSH’s Will Toledo has shed some light on the prospective collaboration (as Stereogum points out). Speaking with Veronica & Lewis on Australia’s triple j, Toledo said the project “remains a mysterious front.” He continued:
We’re hoping that something will happen with that in the future, but really, we don’t know what right now. But if nothing else, we’ll probably cover a few of their songs. I grew up obviously knowing their hits, and I have been listening a lot to Astro Lounge, and I still think it’s a great record. Just, the songs really hold up as pop songs.
When asked whether the project would be a collaboration or a covers collection, Toledo answered, “I can’t say exactly yet. I mean, right now, my plan is just to cover a couple things, but we really haven’t gotten into discussion as to what exactly it’s going to be.” He also divulged his favorite Smash Mouth song: “All Star.” Listen to the interview below; scroll down for the Twitter conversation that sparked it all.

Suggestion: @smashmouth & @carseatheadrest split EP where each covers a song by the other. Please make it happen.
