“Adventure Time” is calling it a day, Deadline reports. The Cartoon Network series, which follows the adventures of Finn, Jake, and other eccentric characters in the colorful Land of Ooo, will end after its ninth season, which is currently in production. Half-hour episodes, specials, and more will trickle out until 2018, when the show bows out for good.
In its six-year run, “Adventure Time”—created by Cartoon Network’s Pendleton Ward—has won several Emmy’s and Peabody’s, as well as cult status and serious critical acclaim. In 2014, the Awl described the kids’ show as “a deeply serious work of moral philosophy, a rip-roaring comic masterpiece, and a meditation on gender politics and love in the modern world.” Guests have included Andy Samberg, Matthew Broderick, Laura Silverman, George Takei, Rainn Wilson, and Neil Patrick Harris.
Rob Sorcher, chief content officer for Cartoon Network, said:
Adventure Time changed the definition of what a kids’ TV series could be, and it’s had a resounding impact upon popular culture around the world. Cartoon Network Studios is proud to have brought together this group of brilliant artists and animators who helped make Adventure Time one of the most critically acclaimed TV series of a generation.
