Warpaint Announce New Album Heads Up, Share “New Song”

It’s been two years since Warpaint have released an album. In the interim, the bandmates have been busy working on solo projects. Jenny Lee Lindberg released a solo album under the name jennylee. Emily Kokal worked with Saul Williams and Paul Bergmann. Stella Mozgawa was featured on a Kurt Vile EP. Theresa Wayman has been working on her solo project called BOSS. Today they’ve announced the follow-up to their self-titled album. It’s called Heads Up, and it’s out September 23 on Rough Trade Records. The band have also shared a new track from the project. It’s called “New Song.” Listen to their new song “New Song,” and see Warpaint’s tour dates, and the Heads Up cover artwork and tracklist below.

Warpaint recorded Heads Up with producer Jacob Bercovici. In a press release, Lindberg said of the process, “Everybody was allowed to have their space, time and creative freedom with songs and figure out, ‘I wonder what the best notes would be? I wonder what the best part would be to play?’” Stella Mozgawa added, “The doors were a little more open in terms of what was accepted and what wasn’t, because we were sharing ideas so rapidly between us. The roles that each of us individually had—or had established—were a little more malleable.” Of Heads Up, Lindberg said:

I feel really proud of what we made—almost surprised and shocked. When we were making it, I was like, “I wonder what this is going to sound like? How’s this going to come together?” I love the way that it came together so nicely. I feel so proud of it, and like it’s an evolution of our band. It sounds like a mature version of Warpaint.
