The xx’s Romy Talks xx’s Origins, Love of Beyoncé With Savages’ Jehnny Beth: Listen

Since April, Savages’ Jehnny Beth has hosted a show on Beats 1 called “Start Making Sense.” She’s had multiple guests on the program, including Nancy Whang (of LCD Soundsystem and the Juan Maclean) and PJ Harvey. For tonight’s episode, she had Romy Madley Croft of the xx on the show. During their conversation, the two discuss how they met, how their personal tastes differ from the music they make, and how the xx began.

Romy said that when the xx first started, she and Oliver Sim purposefully made their lyrics ambiguous because they didn’t want their friends and family (the only people who attended early xx shows) to know who or what their songs were about. It wasn’t until they’d played “thousands of gigs,” that they got comfortable, with Oliver dancing on stage and Jamie xx bouncing around. Romy and Jehnny Beth also connected over their love of Beyoncé. Jehnny Beth recalled a time when Romy played “Haunted” for her during a DJ set. Hear clips from their talk below. The full episode airs tonight at 10 p.m. Eastern.
