Last night at the BET Awards, a number of artists performed Prince tributes. Among them were Sheila E., Erykah Badu, Stevie Wonder, Maxwell, Jennifer Hudson, and Janelle Monáe. (D’Angelo was scheduled to perform, as well, but pulled out at the last minute.) Monáe played a medley of “Delirious,” “Kiss,” “Pop Life,” and “I Would Die 4 U.” Notably, she and her backup dancers honored Prince’s aesthetic legacy with all-white recreations of some of his most famous outfits, designed by Monáe’s stylist Maeve Reilly and designer Sergio Hudson.
Some dancers wore sparkling capes like the one Prince wore to the 1985 Oscars (at which he won Best Original Song Score for Purple Rain). Others wore outfits like those from the “Kiss” music video. Most astoundingly, Monáe herself wore assless chaps, as Prince did for his 1991 MTV Video Music Awards performance. Watch Janelle Monáe’s medley below.
