The Lonely Island–the comedy trio of Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone–have a new film Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping that hits theaters June 3. To promote the Judd Apatow-produced movie, Samberg and Schaffer recently stopped by “Sway in the Morning” for an interview, as Okayplayer points out.
During their conversation, they discuss getting beats from high-profile producers. Samberg says, “We once got sent beats from RZA, which was crazy.” He explains, “They were super, like, experimental. They were very, like, atonal and weird, and we were like, ‘We don’t know how to make this funny, but it’s dope.” Schaffer then reveals, “They sent us a Dilla beat, and we were like, ‘Oh my God, we can’t ruin a Dilla beat!’” He acknowledes, “people will hate us if we do that.”
Later, they discuss their history of working with real rappers and singers, as well as what they enjoy listening to. Samberg even throws in what his wife, Joanna Newsom, likes to hear. He says, “My wife will listen to the new Kanye and stuff like that. She loves Kendrick. We’ve been bumping that ‘New Level’ A$AP Ferg a lot.” Sway compliments Newsom, telling Samberg, “Your wife is gangster, bro! She’s a revolutionary.” Watch the whole interview–where they also reveal A$AP Rocky makes a Popstar cameo–below.
The Lonely Island recently detailed the Popstar soundtrack. It features Akon, Seal, P!nk, Emma Stone, and more. It also includes the previously shared “I’m So Humble” (featuring Adam Levine), “Mona Lisa,” and “Finest Girl (Bin Laden Song).”
