Prince passed away the day before he was due to receive urgent treatment for addiction to painkillers, according to an attorney with knowledge of the investigation, the Star Tribune reports. An opioid addiction specialist, Dr. Howard Kornfeld, was called by Prince representatives on April 20 because Prince was having a "grave medical emergency," Minneapolis attorney William Mauzy, who is working with the Kornfeld family, told the Star Tribune. Because Kornfeld couldn't clear his schedule for April 20, he sent his son and colleague, Andrew Kornfeld, to Paisley Park, according to the report. Howard Kornfeld planned to join them the next day. "The plan was to quickly evaluate his health and devise a treatment plan," Mauzy said on behalf of the Kornfelds. He added, "The doctor was planning on a lifesaving mission." When Prince's body was found in an elevator at Paisley Park, Andrew was one of the people at the residence, Mauzy said. He also claims it was Andrew who called 911.
Toxicology tests have not yet determined whether painkillers were present in Prince's body, or whether they contributed to his death.
