Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig Explains How His Tweet About the Yeah Yeah Yeahs Became a Beyoncé Song

Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig is one of the many credited collaborators on Lemonade, Beyoncé's latest album, which was released on Saturday night. Koenig received a songwriting credit and a co-producing credit on "Hold Up," a track that interpolates Yeah Yeah Yeahs' "Maps" and Soulja Boy's "Turn My Swag On," and also lists Father John Misty and Diplo as contributors. Over the weekend, Koenig pointed to a riff on "Maps" that he tweeted in 2011—"hold up...they don't love u like i love u"—that appears in "Hold Up" as a lyric. After some speculation that he received a credit on the song for this tweet, Koenig has now clarified his involvement. (How did he explain it? In a pair of tweets, of course.)

He said that in 2014, he worked on a song with Diplo that ended up using his "Maps" tweet as the hook. "i figured it was going to be a vampire weekend song but was easily convinced that it could be better/go to a new place as a beyonce song," he wrote. In 2015, "lots of other stuff" happened to that demo, which eventually became "Hold Up." As he concludes: "songs become tweets, tweets become songs - it's the way of the world." Below, find his explanation:
