Occasionally, a group of musicians get together to perform Big Star's Third/Sister Lovers live in concert. That happens again on April 27 at the Alex Theatre in Los Angeles, and this time, it's being filmed for DVD and CD release. Big Star's Jody Stephens will be joined by Wilco's Jeff Tweedy and Pat Sansone, R.E.M.'s Mike Mills, Yo La Tengo's Ira Kaplan, Jessica Pratt, Kronos Quartet, and more. The band will be accompanied by a full chamber orchestra conducted by Carl Marsh, who wrote the album's original orchestrations. Find more info here.
In addition to Third, they plan to perform non-Third Big Star singles including "In the Street," "September Gurls," and more. Other performers include Robyn Hitchcock, Semisonic's Dan Wilson, Chris Stamey of the dB's, latter-day Big Star members Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer, Let’s Active’s Mitch Easter, Brett Harris, Django Haskins, and Skylar Gudasz.
On May 13, Stephens will release the debut album from his band Those Pretty Wrongs. An archival Big Star live album, Live on WLIR, is coming out on April 22 via Ardent.
