Cirque du Soleil Sue Justin Timberlake Over "Don't Hold the Wall"

Justin Timberlake has been sued by Cirque du Soleil over his 20/20 Experience song "Don't Hold the Wall," Variety reports. The lawsuit asserts that Timbaland (who produced Timberlake's track) sampled "Steel Dream" (a song from the show's stage production and 1997 album Quidam) without Cirque's permission. In addition to Timberlake and Timbaland, Cirque du Soleil names co-writers J-Roc and James Fauntleroy, as well as Sony Entertainment, Universal Music, and WB Music Corp as defendants in the suit, which is seeking $800,000 in copyright infringement damages.

Earlier this year, Timberlake's label Universal Music Group was sued over "Suit & Tie," also from 20/20. In that suit, two members of Sly, Slick & Wicked claim that they did not give UMG the rights to their vocal performances from "Sho' Nuff," the 1973 song sampled in "Suit & Tie." They also say that UMG owes them money from a Bud Light ad that used Timberlake's song.

Cassius Announce New Album Ibifornia, Share Tracks With Beastie Boys' Mike D, Cat Power, Pharrell, Ryan Tedder: Listen

Cassius Announce New Album Ibifornia, Share Tracks With Beastie Boys' Mike D, Cat Power, Pharrell, Ryan Tedder: Listen

Last month, long-absent French electronic duo Cassius returned with a new single, "Action," featuring Cat Power and the Beastie Boys' Mike D. The song's video whisked Cassius partners Philippe Zdar and Boom Bass away to a fictitious tropical island named "Ibifornia." Now, Cassius have announced their first album since 2006's 15 Again, and it's fittingly titled Ibifornia. They're also streaming two songs from the album: "Go Up," which feaures Cat Power and Pharrell Williams, and "The Missing," which features One Republic's Ryan Tedder and JAW, a Paris singer/songwriter who has worked with Cassius before. Also featured on the album is John Gourley of Portugal. The Man.

The album title is, as you might guess, a combination between the place names Ibiza and California. Zdar told Pitchfork he and Boom Bass are in love with the pop music they associate with California, like the Beach Boys and Michael Jackson. But they also love the music on the Balearic island of Ibiza — where, Zdar said, you can play 10-minute dubs "where nothing happens" and the crowd will go crazy. So Cassius invented a country that would mix that "underground house" and spirit of freedom from Ibiza with their sense of California.

"This album, for the first time in our life, has something which is more," Zdar told Pitchfork. "It's not only a collection of tracks. It's really offering a way of thinking (laughs) about your life — finding your Ibifornia. And go there and be happy there. There are too many moments where we don't do what we want to do. This place is super powerful for us."

As for Ibifornia's varied collaborators, Zdar described a "Cassius and the Family Stone" feel to the recording process. "When we finished the session in New York with Chan [Marshall, of Cat Power] she looked at us and said it's like a family," Zdar told Pitchfork. "Pharrell brought his talent and, because he was in the middle of a big, big success, he was bringing a lot of energy... and he brought a nice song, too."

Mike D told Pitchfork he recorded with Cassius in both New York and Malibu. Along with "Action," the Beastie Boy also collaborated on "Love Parade," which contains a lyrical reference to late Motörhead frontman Lemmy. Mike D said he recorded the song before Lemmy's death late last year and the line was inspired by the 2010 documentary Lemmy. "I had seen the film, of course I had grown up with [Motörhead classic] 'Ace of Spades,'" he told Pitchfork. "That was a metal song that crossed over into hardcore."

Mike D added that if "Action" is about "freedom and collaborative relationships ... and the loss of freedom," then "Love Parade" is "more straight-up relationship business."

Paul McCartney Announces 67-Track Pure McCartney Compilation

Paul McCartney Announces 67-Track Pure McCartney Compilation

Paul McCartney has announced Pure McCartney, a 67-track compilation album that collects songs from across his post-Beatles discography. The compilation spans from his 1970 debut solo record McCartney, through more solo work, songs with Wings and the Fireman (a duo with Youth), and up to the current decade with "Hope for the Future," his 2014 song for the video game "Destiny," and a 2015 remix of "Say Say Say" (a collab with Michael Jackson included on the Pipes of Peace reissue). Pure McCartney is out June 10, and it's available as a 2xCD, 4xCD, and 4xLP. See the full tracklist here, and check out the artwork below.

McCartney said of the project, "Me and my team came up with the idea of putting together a collection of my recordings with nothing else in mind other than having something fun to listen to." He added, "Maybe it's to be enjoyed on a long car journey or an evening at home or at a party with friends? So we got our heads together and came up with these diverse playlists from various periods of my long and winding career."

Reflecting on the tracklisting, he said:

The word "career" is a bit misleading because to me it has been more like a musical adventure than a proper job....It pleases me, and often amazes me, that I've been involved in the writing and recording of so many songs, each of them so different from the others.

Kanye and Beethoven Together at Last for "Yeethoven" Orchestral Concert

Kanye and Beethoven Together at Last for "Yeethoven" Orchestral Concert

On April 16, a 70-piece orchestra will (finally) bring the music of Kanye West and Ludwig van Beethoven together. Co-curated by conductor Yuga Cohler and arranger Stephen Feigenbaum, "Yeethoven" is a concert from the Great Music Series (hosted by the Young Musicians Foundation) that will compare and "splice together" six Beethoven works and six Yeezus tracks. The Beethoven pieces include the Egmont Overture, Symphony No. 5 (op. 67), and String Quartet No. 14 (op. 131). "Yeethoven" will aim to show how contemporary popular music and classical music are fundamentally similar. In a promo video, a voiceover says, West and Beethoven's "willingness to ruthlessly upend tradition and their influence on the larger culture can't be overstated." Also in the video, the 70-piece orchestra play West's "Blood on the Leaves" and Beethoven's Fifth. Watch it below.

"Yeethoven" takes place at the Aratani Theatre in Los Angeles. Admission is free; tickets are not required.

Andrew W.K. Organizes His Own Political Party

Andrew W.K. Organizes His Own Political Party

Andrew W.K. has launched what appears to be a new political party, called (of course) "The Party Party." Today, the musician rolled out a new website and social media accounts for the organization, which he's framing as "an all-inclusive alternative to the traditional two party model." He's also shared a short promotional video detailing his goals of unity and liberation from a two-party political system. Watch it below. In the clip, W.K. claims to have filed the "relevant paperwork with the Secretary of State." The website further explains that "once we [the Party Party] have the required signatures, we can begin our formal journey into traditional politics." Potential supporters are invited to sign the petition on the Party Party website. (As NPR points out, it's unclear whether the Party Party is an elaborate prank or a legitimate political organization.)

This isn't Andrew W.K's first foray into the political arena. In 2012, the U.S. Department of State invited the musician to take a trip to Bahrain as a cultural ambassador. The agency subsequently cancelled the visit; W.K. claimed they pulled the plug just hours after he recieved his itinerary. In spite of this, he vowed to "continue partying" and "work everyday to unite our human race through the power of positive partying."

Here's the ostensible Party Party platform, as outlined on its website:

The Party Party is simple in its mission: To free the American people from the dysfunction that is our two party system. At best, bi-partisan politics has created an insurmountable divide that has separated the people into two categories of Democrat and Republican. The Party Party aims to provide an alternative to the divisive labeling of our current system. Most people have become too caught up in the bickering of our news cycles to realize that we ultimately desire the exact same things: reliable access to education, healthcare, and a sense of social equality. If enough people are willing to liberate themselves from choosing left or right, a third voice can emerge with a much more powerful message. A message that will open the eyes of our representatives and help them see that this “Us versus Them” mentality has kept our country from providing its people with a REAL sense of freedom. If we open our hearts and approach the problems we face with an open mind, real change can be achieved. We hope you will join us on this journey.

Action Bronson Apologizes for Behavior Seen as Misogynist and Transphobic, Following Removal from College Concert

Action Bronson Apologizes for Behavior Seen as Misogynist and Transphobic, Following Removal from College Concert

Action Bronson has been taken off the bill for George Washington University's Spring Fling, taking place this Saturday, April 2, XXL reports. The rapper's set was cancelled following an outpouring of student complaints claiming that the rapper's lyrics are misogynist, transphobic, and insensitive to sexual assault survivors. "The Program Board has decided to remove Action Bronson from Saturday’s setlist," university representatives said in a statement. "We apologize to the GW community for causing distress over the past few days and for attempting to bring an artist who is not consistent with our values of diversity and inclusion.” GoldLink will headline the concert instead. Update 6:20 p.m.: Action Bronson has written an open letter to GWU students and the public. Read it below.

On Tuesday, The GW Hatchet published an editorial by opinions editor Sarah Blugis calling for the rapper's removal, referring to him as "a blatant misogynist" with "a history of transphobia." She cited Bronson's controversial 2011 song "Consensual Rape," as well as his "Brunch" video—a clip released the same year that depicts the rapper cooking next to a dead woman, dragging her body into his car, and stabbing her while calling her a "bitch"—as evidence of her claims.

A student petition requesting his withdrawal for similar reasons, meanwhile, has received over 349 signatures so far. On Monday, the university's program board said that they had "received assurances from Mr. Bronson's team that it ["Consensual Rape"] [would] not be performed at Spring Fling."

The cancelled Spring Fling set follows Bronson's removal from a NXNE festival showcase in Toronto last June. Following the public outcry, Bronson distanced himself from the controversial material in a series of tweets that he later deleted. He then backtracked, declaring "FUCK ALL YALL HATERS BLOW DICK."

Here's the George Washington University Program Board's complete statement:

The Program Board has decided to remove Action Bronson from Saturday’s setlist. We apologize to the GW community for causing distress over the past few days and for attempting to bring an artist who is not consistent with our values of diversity and inclusion. Spring Fling is intended to be an event for all students to enjoy and including Action Bronson in the day would go against this. GoldLink will headline Spring Fling this year, and we are looking to fill the remaining time with a local act alongside Lean Quatifah.

We have learned important lessons from our mistakes in this situation and are eager to grow as an organization so that we can continue to offer the student body fun and welcoming concerts in the future. We have already begun discussions to ensure that the Program Board will have a more structured and formal system to screen artists and will work to incorporate a greater level of student input so that in the future we invite only those who live up to GW’s values.

We hope to see everyone on Saturday.

Update 6:20 p.m.: Action Bronson has released the following statement:

To the Students at George Washington University and the public at large:

I’m writing this letter to hopefully bring clarity to some misconceptions about who I am as an artist and as a person. It has become clear to me that things have reached a point which makes me feel the need to address the issues raised so that we can bring some understanding and healing to the table, so to speak. I can’t continue to walk around with the thought that people are thinking these things about me that are far from who I really am.

Five years ago in 2011, I wrote a song called "Consensual Rape" that admittedly contains lyrics and a general sentiment of violence towards woman which I never meant to represent who I am but rather to depict a story. I approach my music as other types of artists approach their work, and I don’t always intend the stories that I tell, the characters that I play in them or the lyrics I lay down to be taken literally. The songs I make aren’t any different than a director creating a movie, or an author writing a book meaning they contain scenes or things happen in them that aren’t meant to be anything but an artistic expression- just a song, a book or a film. I’ve never performed "Consensual Rape" at a concert, and I don’t plan to.

Regardless, I understand that when it comes to musicians, and more specifically rappers, the lyrics I say are taken to heart many times as a representation of my beliefs or true feelings. SO please let me make this very clear: I think rape and acts of violence toward woman are DISGUSTING. I would never condone anything remotely close to that type of behavior, and it’s certainly not what I’m about at all. But, the song in question has caused people discomfort and pain and I’m sincerely sorry about it. It was not my intention to hurt people when I made it years ago, and I certainly will be much more sensitive on this matter moving ahead.

Similarly, there has been some attention placed on a insensitive Instagram post I made years ago regarding me inappropriately labelling someone as transexual and being disrespectful to them in a way that is not ok. I have sat with members of the LGBT community recently in an effort to understand how to avoid being hurtful and insensitive towards these issues moving forward. I have never had any issues with anyone’s sexual orientation or gender transitioning. I’m far, far from perfect and I recognize my flaws and I’m making an effort to grow and be a better human.

Thanks for reading this.

Migos' Offset Arrested Again

Migos' Offset Arrested Again

Migos' Offset has had another run-in with the law, TMZ reports. He was reportedly arrested again early this morning in Chattahoochee, Ga., this time for pot possession and obstruction of justice as well as driving with a suspended license. Police said they pulled Offset over and found less than an ounce of marijuana, according to TMZ. Pitchfork has reached out to Migos' spokespeople for comment.

Earlier this month, the rapper was arrested in Atlanta for driving with a suspended license. His lawyer told TMZ the rapper thought the fine for a suspended license had already been paid. A clerk at the Atlanta Municipal Court reportedly corroborated that claim. In December, Offset was released from jail after spending most of the year being held without bail for drugs and firearm possession.

Krist Novoselic Responds to Buzz Osborne's Montage of Heck Criticism

Krist Novoselic Responds to Buzz Osborne's Montage of Heck Criticism

Last year, Melvins frontman Buzz Osborne declared Brett Morgen's recent documentary Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck to be "total bullshit" and "mostly misguided fiction." (He later stood by the comments.) Today, Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic replied to Osborne's comments in an interview with Rolling Stone. "That's just Buzz," he said. "He's always been like that, but we love him so we just accept him for that. He's always had these opinions. Like, 'Oh, there goes Buzz again.' You never know what he's gonna say, but he means well, and he's a great musician. He's been a dear friend for a long time. That's the way it is."

Novoselic appears frequently in Montage of Heck, both as a talking head and in archival footage. He also appears on Melvins' upcoming album, Basses Loaded, playing bass and accordion on a song called "Maybe I Am Amused." Dave Grohl was also slated to record with Melvins, but according to Osborne, he "blew it off." Basses Loaded is out June 3, and also features contributions from Butthole Surfers' JD Pinkus, Big Business' Jared Warren, Mr. Bungle/Fantômas' Trevor Dunn, and Redd Kross' Steve McDonald.

Destroyer Announces "My Mystery" 12", Shares Video for Remix: Watch

Last year, Destroyer released his latest album, Poison Season. During the sessions for that LP, Dan Bejar recorded a song titled "My Mystery" that didn't make the final tracklisting. Now, it's finally being released on a new 12", due out May 6 via Merge. (It will also be available digitally.) The new song is backed with a remix from DJjohnedwardcollins@gmail.com, aka the New Pornographers' John Collins, a member of Bejar's live band. (It's not his first Poison Season remix; he previously shared a new take on "Forces From Above.") Today, Bejar has shared a visual for the remix. Directed by Nicolas Bragg, the clip sees him exploring the streets of Mexico City. Watch it below. Additionally, Bejar has announced more tour dates behind Poison Season. This time around, he'll be playing venues in Asia and Europe. Find his itinerary below.

Here's what Bejar had to say about "My Mystery" and its remix in a press release:

We recorded a song called “My Mystery” a year and a half ago. Kind of a light number, vaguely danceable. Wistful, looking back not unfondly on time spent and dull misadventures had within the dead-as-a-doornail music industry. And the feeling of where it leaves you, like a rat in the middle of the ocean, though not as harsh as that; as if rats could swim an ocean’s length.

Then one day DJ johnedwardcollins@gmail.com called me up and said, “You got any shit for me?”…

Jay Z Claims Tidal's Former Owners Distorted Subscriber Count

Jay Z Claims Tidal's Former Owners Distorted Subscriber Count

Jay Z is waging a legal battle against the previous owners of Tidal. The music streaming service has sent a letter to Norwegian media company Schibsted claiming the seller inflated subscriber totals going into their $56 million deal, Bloomberg reports. Citing "active legal proceedings," a Tidal spokesperson declined to comment to Pitchfork beyond a statement confirming the letter. "It became clear after taking control of Tidal and conducting our own audit that the total number of subscribers was actually well below the 540,000 reported to us by the prior owners," the statement reads. "As a result, we have now served legal notice to parties involved in the sale." Tidal said it has now reached 3 million paying subscribers.

Schibsted, which last year sold Jay Z the service that became Tidal, denied overstating subscriber numbers. "We disagree with the accusations in the letter and any potential claims," a Schibsted spokesperson told Bloomberg. "We would like to point out that the company was listed on the stock exchange with everything that entails regarding transparent financial reporting."

Page Six, citing "multiple sources," reports that the service will soon also begin offering original movies, citing "multiple sources." Pitchfork has reached out to Tidal for confirmation.

Last year, for the first time, streaming became the biggest source of U.S. recorded music revenue. Paid subscriptions made up the bulk of 2015 U.S. streaming revenue.

Everything But the Girl's Ben Watt Streams New Album Fever Dream Featuring Bernard Butler, Marissa Nadler, More

Ben Watt, formerly one half of Everything But the Girl, is streaming his new solo album Fever Dream. The record features singers Marissa Nadler and Hiss Golden Messenger's M.C. Taylor, along with Suede's Bernard Butler, who'll also tour as part of Watt's backing band. Below, check out the album and see Watt's live dates.

Watt said in a statement:

People have been asking me did I write these songs at the same time as Hendra, have they been lying around for a while. The answer is no. I was simply deeply inspired by the Hendra experience, the reception, the months of touring, the rediscovery of my voice. I felt compelled to write more. They came in a burst at the beginning of last year. I feel I have somehow tapped into a nucleus of myself again lately. It feels urgent. From the source.

M.C. Taylor added, "I am honored to play a small part on the new album by Ben Watt. It's a truly gorgeous record - badass and moving at a time when people are starving for something real."

Dev Hynes, Chairlift's Caroline Polachek, Dan Deacon, SOPHIE Scoring "Authority Figure" Performance Piece

Dev Hynes, Chairlift's Caroline Polachek, Dan Deacon, SOPHIE Scoring "Authority Figure" Performance Piece

"Authority Figure" is a performance art piece and "social psychology experiment" that will bring together performers, installation artists, choreographers, and musicians. It's a collaborative piece centered around the theme of "authority" created by FlucT's Monica Mirabile and Otion Front partner Sarah Kinlaw. It takes place at Knockdown Center in Queens, N.Y. from May 20-22. Dev Hynes (Blood Orange), Caroline Polachek (Chairlift), Dan Deacon, SOPHIE, Pictureplane, Eartheater, and Hot Sugar will all contribute original music to the event, Fader reports. Find more information here.

Mirabile and Kinlaw shared a statement about the project with Fader:

"Everyone's relationship to authority is layered and complex, including ours. Whether we are children, employers, bitches, cops and/or lovers, we have to deal with our relationships to obedience. Obedience and authority exist on a spectrum, we fluctuate between agency and insecurity on the daily. Authority Figure is choreography of the systems that program our obedient identities so that we can move through them and start to understand our relationships to each other. It's about performing agency and responsibility or the point when you shift from observer to participant."

Here's a teaser of the performance:

Brandy Sues Label for $1 Million

Brandy Sues Label for $1 Million

Brandy has sued her record label for $1 million in damages, Entertainment Weekly reports. In a complaint filed Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court, she claimed Chameleon Entertainment Group "will not pay for her to record new albums or allow her to otherwise release music to her fans." The suit called this an "attempt to bully" Brandy into signing a new deal with Chameleon on worse financial terms for the singer. Pitchfork has reached out to Chameleon for comment.

Brandy's most recent album was 2012's Two Eleven. In January, she released the single "Beggin & Pleadin." In a recent Pitchfork interview, Brandy said she didn't know if the song would be on an album, adding, "I'm writing, I have a lot of ideas, I'm in the studio. We're good."
