Last November, M.I.A. shared a politically themed video for her song "Borders," in which she and a group of refugees climbed wire fences, crowded on to tiny boats, and waded across the sea. In one scene, she is pictured in a Paris Saint-Germain soccer jersey, with sponsor Fly Emirates' logo adjusted to read "Fly Pirates." Now, PSG have allegedly demanded that M.I.A. remove the video, stop using their image and brand, and pay compensation for harm suffered, according to a letter M.I.A. shared on social media this morning.
"We had the unpleasant surprise to find that the singer, in this video clip, appears twice wearing the official jersey of our team," PSG's lawyers allegedly wrote in the letter. "More than being surprised, we simply do not understand why we are associated, through our logo and the official jersey of our team's players, to such denunciation."
It went on to describe the club's popularity and reputability, before claiming the club donated €1 million ($1.1 million), in light of the refugee crisis, to French charities Secours Populaire and the UNHCR.
The alleged letter, apparently received on December 21, concludes with a demand that amends be made within 24 hours of the letter's receipt. Read it below.
