On the podcast "Song Exploder", Hrishikesh Hirway asks artists to break down their songs and discuss how they're made. The latest episode features Courtney Barnett on her single "Depreston," from Sometimes I Sit and Think and Sometimes I Just Sit. In it, she describes how the song was inspired by the Go-Betweens' "Streets of Your Town" and a morbid househunting trip in the town of Preston. Listen above.
"I could always hear a group singing that refrain," Barnett said of the song's chorus. "That was my idea, but when I actually did it, it didn't sound right. ... It felt a bit too cheery, a bit too Seasame Street. So we kept it pretty simple."
The next installment of "Song Exploder" will feature MGMT on "Time to Pretend."
