André 3000 to Co-Star in Season 2 of "American Crime"

André 3000 to Co-Star in Season 2 of "American Crime"

André 3000 will star in the second season of ABC's anthology drama "American Crime", Billboard reports. André Benjamin will play Michael Lacroix, an architect and one-half of a power couple (his wife Terri is played by Regina King). The season's arc traces the couple's fight to defend their son when he becomes entangled in a scandal at an elite private school.

Ridley and Benjamin previously collaborated on the Jimi Hendrix biopic All Is By My Side, in which Benjamin played Hendrix.

American Crime is an Emmy-nominated anthology directed by John Ridley (who also directed the Hendrix biopic) whose narrative follows an incident at a Midwestern high school that sparks discussions about gender issues, sexual orientation, and sexual identity.

"Personally, I couldn’t be more excited than to work again with Andre," Ridley told the Hollywood Reporter. "He is an amazing individual, a true artist, and All is by my Side is one of the reasons I was given the reins on American Crime. Folks at ABC were absolutely moved by Andre’s performance in the film, and by the overall language of cinema we used in telling the story. It’s fair to say American Crime might not exist were it not for our previous collaboration."

Earlier this month, Chance the Rapper and Lil B revealed that they had recorded a "based freestyle album" together. In a new interview with Bootleg Kev on Tampa Bay radio station Wild 94.1, Chance talked a little bit more about the project, as Stereogum points out. In the interview, Chance also talked about his upcoming Family Matters tour, the progression of Chicago rap in the last few years, whether he'll sign with a major ("not at this point"), working with Kanye, and the beef between Drake and Meek Mill. On the latter point, he was diplomatic. "Beef isn’t necessarily my forte," he said, "but I know them and I think they’re cool people." You can listen to the interview below.

Vic Mensa and Future Islands' Sam Herring Chat Backstage at Pitchfork Music Festival

Future Islands and Vic Mensa both performed at this year's Pitchfork Music Festival. The Talkhouse Music podcast got Future Islands frontman Sam Herring and Vic to sit down together backstage for a chat. (Previously, they hosted Haim and Chvrches singer Lauren Mayberry). You can listen to it above.

Herring and Vic chatted for a half hour, and broached a variety of topics: their mutual love of stealing from convenience stores, the free stuff they get as they get more famous (Vic: "What is it about having more stuff, then you get more stuff that's free?"), how albums leak, Herring's dance moves, and much more.

At one point, they have an extended discussion about the ethics of taking corporate money. "My perspective was always like, I'd never do the corporate shit," Vic said. "I felt like its whack, it's industry shit, and then I come to where I am now, and the majority of money that I get to keep myself afloat with and do shit with is from corporations."

Lil B, DOOM, GZA Get Marvel Comic Book Covers

Lil B, DOOM, GZA Get Marvel Comic Book Covers

Last month, Marvel Comics announced they would pay homage to hip-hop through a series of variant covers inspired by classic and contemporary hip-hop albums. Today, they revealed a handful of covers inspired by Lil B's Black Flame, DOOM and Madlib's Madvillainy, and GZA's Liquid Swords, as Billboard reports.

That's Thor, above, in the style of Madvillainy; below, Hercules gets the Lil B treatment, while GZA is used for the Contest of Champions. The GZA-inspired cover goes on sale in October, while Lil B and DOOM/Madlib can be had in November.

"The outpouring of love from hip-hop fans, global music-centric websites, as well as musical luminaries like Nas, Run the Jewels, Posdnuos, Questlove, DMC, and Pete Rock speaks volumes about the ongoing cross-cultural dialog that prompted these homage covers," Marvel EIC Axel Alonso told Billboard. "That dialog will only increase as readers get the full picture of Marvel's offerings in the coming year, and see what lurks beneath the covers."

Other artists in Marvel's series include Lauryn Hill, Wu-Tang Clan, Tyler, the Creator, Eric B and Rakim, and many more.

Meek Mill Responds to Drake's "Back to Back Freestyle" with Latest Diss Track "Wanna Know"

Drake and Meek Mill are currently embroiled in a conflict over the latter's claims that the former used a ghostwriter for his verse on "R.I.C.O.", which appeared on Meek's new album Dreams Worth More Than Money. Meek Mill has now responded to Drake's latest diss track "Back to Back Freestyle" with a new track that features Drake's alleged ghostwriter Quentin Miller. It's called "Wanna Know", and you can listen to it above.

On Saturday's installment of "OVO Sound Radio", Drake premiered "Charged Up", his response to Meek Mill's initial claim that Drake used a ghostwriter. Following a screamed 15-second response from Meek, Drake shared another diss track called "Back to Back Freestyle".

"Back to Back Freestyle" refered to Meek's current spot on Nicki Minaj's "Pinkprint Tour", in which Drake raps, “You love her then you gotta get a world tour/ Is that a world tour or your girl’s tour?/ I know that you gotta be a thug for her/ This ain’t what she meant when she told you to open up more.” The song was accompanied by a photo of Toronto Blue Jay Joe Carter's series-winning home run in the 1993 World Series. ?uestlove Remembers Being Held at Gunpoint by Police While Listening To U2

?uestlove Remembers Being Held at Gunpoint by Police While Listening To U2

Image via ?uestlove's Instagram

?uestlove has shared a remembrance about a time when he was 16 and Police held him up at gunpoint as he listened to U2 with a group of friends. According to the story, which was written in full on ?uest's instagram, the incident took place as he was "coming from a friday afternoon church youth group event". Read the story below.

U2's music haunts me. Always did.I was 16 yrs old coming from a friday afternoon church youth group event. At 8 me & 2 pals went to see their '88 Rattle & Hum doc. We were sold: it was a half hour to midnight & we had just enough time to run to #TowerRecords & cop their discography. I got the War/Unforgettable Fire/Joshua Tree & Rattle & Hum tapes. Grabbed "Unforgettable" & popped it in the player. I worked in a record shop so I already knew some of these songs. Instantly a fan. A great night of hanging w friends, food, movies & music #FunTimes.....& then....it happened....I became an adult: we got pulled over. Most people's Rites Of Passage are marked happy occasions like graduation or birth or things you do when in love. Mine was being held at gunpoint at 16. I don't even know what happened: we were on Washington Ave & then this flashlight blinded us & voice on a PA said "put your hands in the air" dog I almost had an instant colonic. When you get pulled over in a hostile manner you are NOT in your right mind: like giving a speech, or being a nervous contestant on the Price Is Right. Why?! ---the only thing I remember was #TheEdge's trademark delay plug in. I was so scared to turn the tape down (member when Chapelle said black people turn radio off when getting pulled over cause noone wants to get their ass beat to a soundtrack?)---they were itching for us to try something. I hated the guilt of just being me. Nothing more degrading in life than the helplessness you feel when you get pulled over. I questioned everything in my head that night: why did we go out? Did we steal this car? Maybe if we had Keith Sweat or Prince playin they woulda believed us. Sat there 30 mins frozen. emasculated. As they left we STAYED THERE Like 10 mins. Still traumatized. U2 never sounded the same again. Every song= Put your hands in the air now!! Echoing. I felt robbed of alot that night. But the ability to NOT associate that sound w that experience was hard to get over. I Never shared this cause I thought it was silly. But in light of what's (always been) goin on, I felt it was time. Just wanna thank the guys for inviting us 2nite & for giving me a new beginning experiencing @U2.

Chief Keef Hologram Concert Craziness Continues With Lawsuit Threat, More

Chief Keef Hologram Concert Craziness Continues With Lawsuit Threat, More

Chief Keef's intent to perform as a hologram at a memorial concert for a slain toddler has turned into quite a debacle. First, a planned show in Chicago was postponed, then moved to Hammond, Indiana, only to be shut down by the police. As Billboard reports, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel's office issued a statement calling Keef "an unacceptable role model," and saying that his music "promotes violence." City Hall also said the concert "posed a significant public safety risk."

Keef expressed his anger by encouraging his fans to call Chicago City Hall, and also by claiming that he's going to run for Mayor himself. In a new interview with Billboard, Keef said that Chicago city officials were "hating." "They don’t want to see a young black man be successful and try to do something good," he said. "It’s crazy." He added, "If you ask me, man, fuck the mayor with a sandpaper dick! Say it like that."

When asked by Billboard if he's serious about running for mayor, Keef said, “Hell yeah, I’m running! I’m going to get all the ballots and everything. Chief Keef for mayor! Vote for me! They’re going to love me when I get into office. I’m going to make everything right." However, as Billboard points out, Keef can't legally run for mayor due to a previous gun charge.

Keef's camp believes the police shutdown of the concert was illegal, citing First Amendment rights. Alki David, who owns Keef's record label FilmOn as well as the hologram company Hologram USA, told Billboard, "We’re most definitely going to pursue this [in court]. Municipal leaders are dictating what young people can listen to. It’s absurd. There is zero justification.”

David and Keef are still trying to make the concert happen, though. A plan to have the hologram perform simultaneously in Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles this September hit a setback today when David engaged in a back-and-forth with the Madison Square Garden Company, which owns the downtown Chicago venue the Chicago Theatre. As Billboard reports, David claims MSG backed out of an agreement to host the concert. MSG claims there was never an agreement in the first place.

Keef's new album Bang 3 is set for release August 18 via FilmOn. It includes the track "Ain't Missing You":

Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck Gets Unreleased Cobain Song for Theatrical Release

Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck Gets Unreleased Cobain Song for Theatrical Release

Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, the documentary about the Nirvana singer, aired on HBO on May 4. For the upcoming theatrical release, director Brett Morgen added an unreleased Cobain song to the soundtrack, as Billboard reports. The unheard, untitled song features Cobain singing in a falsetto, and was reportedly recorded in 1991.

Morgen said the new song was inserted without changing the documentary, which was "built as a theatrical experience." According to him, it'll be released in the top "50 or 100 markets" on August 7.

Previously, Morgen said an album of Cobain's home recordings would be released this summer. He said that in the process of making the documentary, he found 107 cassettes featuring 200 hours of "never-before-heard or rarely heard music." He also said the tapes contain jam sessions with Courtney Love, jam sessions with friends and Nirvana, demo tapes, demo tapes with his punk band Fecal Matter, serious and un-serious spoken word material, covers of the Beatles, sound effects, sound design, and more.

The new LP isn't the first collaboration between Kozelek and Broadrick. Jesu's 2009 album Opiate Sun came out through Caldo Verde, and Broadrick later interviewed Kozelek for the Caldo Verde website. In 2013, Kozelek covered Godflesh's song "Like Rats", and the following year he called out Broadrick by name in his track "The Possum".

In other Kozelek news, he recently announced Dreams of Childhooda spoken word album created in collaboration with Argentine actor Nicolás Pauls. His duet with Slowdive's Rachel Goswell, meanwhile, will appear on the Minor Victories album.

On top of that, at Latitude Festival in Suffolk, England recently, he brought out Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore and Steve Shelley to do Benji's "Richard Ramirez Died Today of Natural Causes". Watch footage of that performance below via Spin.

Pitchfork Conversations Podcast Launches With Wilco's Jeff Tweedy

Pitchfork Conversations Podcast Launches With Wilco's Jeff Tweedy

Pitchfork is proud to announce the launch of the Pitchfork Conversations podcast. The podcast features recordings of live chats between Pitchfork staff and notable artists.

The first one is a recording of Editor-in-Chief Mark Richardson's conversation with Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, which took place July 16 at Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art, as part of the InSightOut series presented by MailChimp.

It came at a pivotal moment for Tweedy and Wilco. It’s been 20 years since the group launched their recording career with 1995’s A.M., so the talk provided an opportunity to discuss their formative years and Chicago’s mid-‘90s music scene, as well as the band’s brand new album, Star Wars, which was actually surprise-released as the event was taking place. (The following night, Wilco headlined Pitchfork Music Festival.)

Future installments of the podcast will feature conversations with a variety of artists from various events.

Listen to the Tweedy podcast above via Soundcloud, or download it via iTunes here. Subscribe to the Pitchfork Conversations podcast on iTunes here.

Morrissey Says He Was Sexually Assaulted by Airport Security

Morrissey Says He Was Sexually Assaulted by Airport Security

Morrissey has posted a note on True to You saying he was sexually assaulted at San Francisco International Airport earlier this week. In the post, he describes passing through the walk-through scanner before being approached by an airport security officer. The officer, who was later identified as the General Manager On Duty, "stopped me, crouched before me and groped my penis and testicles," Morrissey says.

Two members British Airways Special Services were, he adds, "horrified" by the assault, and suggested he file a complaint. He relays the following exchange:

You have just sexually groped this man.
Officer: That's just your opinion.
What you have done is illegal.
Officer: That's just your opinion.
You have no right to do what you have just done.
Officer: That's just your opinion.

Here's Moz's response:

Apart from "that's just your opinion", he would not comment, even though, since the penis and testicles were mine and no one else's, then my opinion must surely have some meaning. But, of course, what the airport security officer was saying was: your opinion will never count in the eyes of the law. The words "that's just your opinion" volunteered themselves from this 'officer's' mouth before he had even heard the question. He knew he could be confronted, but he also knew that he could never be challenged (even though the entire incident is most certainly on CCTV camera).

He concluded, "Do people have minds?" Read the full post here.

Yesterday, Morrissey penned a separate post attacking Cecil the Lion's killer, a Sydney bookstore that apparently mismanaged his book-signing, and his record label Harvest. Read it here.

Josh Homme and Arctic Monkeys' Alex Turner Read iPhone Notes, Discuss Songwriting on Beats 1

Josh Homme and Arctic Monkeys' Alex Turner Read iPhone Notes, Discuss Songwriting on Beats 1

Queens Of The Stone Age frontman Josh Homme has his own radio show on Apple Music's Beats 1 called "The Alligator Hour". During tonight's show, he welcomed his special guest, Alex Turner of Arctic Monkeys. At one point, they start reading their iPhone Notes. One of Turner's is the phrase "John Lennon as a TV chef." Listen here; Turner appears around the 30-minute mark.

Homme also talked to Turner about his songwriting process. During a recording session where both men were present, Homme said he was impressed when he watched Turner change a song's lyrics on the fly without writing anything down. "I have notebooks and do write things down, but I don't know how much sense it would make," Turner said. "Often it looks more like an algorithm by the time I'm finished."

Their conversation will continue on next week's episode.

YACHT Announce New Album I Thought the Future Would Be Cooler Via Billboard

YACHT Announce New Album I Thought the Future Would Be Cooler Via Billboard

Still from drone video footage shot by Renee Lusano

Los Angeles dance-rock act YACHT have announced the follow-up to 2011's Shangri-La in a very big way. Today, the duo dropped a Google Maps pin at the location of a Los Angeles intersection, where a billboard could be found reading "I Thought The Future Would Be Cooler": the title of their fifth album. It's out this fall on Downtown Records.

YACHT's Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans are currently hanging out in front of the billboard. Tune in to Periscope now to see them in action. Below, watch a video of the billboard, shot on a drone.

The YouTube video description for the video contains with the following message:

The future is an impossible goal. It’s something we chase after, believing in an illusion of control. That isn’t to say our actions don’t affect what the future is like— in our case, hot, dry, loud, unjust—but that once we catch up to yesterday’s future, it’s no longer what we imagined. It’s just the present all over again. And so on.

We’ve made an album about that. It contains some speculations about the future that are big and distant as science fiction stories. But it’s also about looking carefully at the world around us and trying to understand what we’ve done with the imaginations of those who came before us. Would they believe it?

We live in a complex moment. There seem to be networks at every level of reality; as with all our technologies, we can’t keep ourselves from grabbing them, turning them around, and using them as a mirror. Every person is a node. Our technological economy is full of entities selling our own lives back to us. It’s easy to feel disillusioned, if only it wasn’t all so funny sometimes. #ITTFWBC
