PacSun has pulled a T-shirt that was designed in collaboration with A$AP Rocky, USA Today reports. It featured an upside-down American flag. On Memorial Day, the company's Facebook page was inundated with comments calling the shirt "disrespectful" (among other things). The company issued this apology:
As a retailer grounded in youth culture, PacSun values artistic and creative expression through the brands that we sell in our stores. Out of respect for those who have put their lives on the line for our country, we have decided to stop selling the licensed flag t-shirt and are removing it from our stores and website immediately. We thank the men and women in uniform for their extraordinary service.
Flag code dictates that an upside-down flag should only be displayed as "a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property."
The upside-down flag has been part of Rocky's aesthetic for some time now. It was a fixture of his stage set in 2012.
