De La Soul recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund their eighth album, their first since 2004's The Grind Date. The LP will feature Damon Albarn, David Byrne (on a track called "Snoopies"), 2 Chainz (on "Whodini"), and Little Dragon (on "Drawn"). The Kickstarter aimed to raise $110,000. The campaign was successful, ending today with $600,829 in contributions.
To put that number in perspective, the Kickstarter campaign to officially release Aphex Twin's Caustic Window netted $67,424.
The band will reportedly start recording next month.
The album will feature samples culled entirely from original recordings from De La Soul and the Rhythm Roots All-Stars. In a statement, Dave Jude Jolicoeur said, "One way to look at this is that we’re sampling ourselves. So far, we’ve got over 200 hours of tape—we’ve been recording this music for years and finally we’ve got what we need to make the best De La Soul record ever."
Those who contributed to the Kickstarter were offered a variety of perks, including shopping trips with De La Soul and a day in the studio with the group which lets contributors record vocals for the album.
Listen to their recently released collaboration with Nas, "God It" (which won't appear on the album), and watch the Kickstarter video.
