Mastodon band members Brann Dailor, Bill Kelliher, and Brent Hinds portrayed "wildlings" on tonight's episode of "Game of Thrones", which was filmed in Belfast in Northern Ireland. As previously reported, the band's original song "White Walker" is featured on the "Game of Thrones" mixtape Catch the Throne Vol. 2, but in the instance of their physical appearance, a press release from Reprise Records reports that the band was personally invited to participate in the show by "Game of Thrones" executive producer Dan Weiss, who is a fan of the band.

Brann Dailor said of the experience:

It was such an incredible experience to be on set as extras for our collective favorite show Game Of Thrones and to be wildlings murdered and then brought back to life by White Walkers was beyond amazing. I watched my best friends Brent and Bill, murdered right in front of me as I myself was stabbed in the stomach and had my throat slit multiple times, and I didn't mind at all. It made me love being in Mastodon even more. We are more than privileged and honored to have been a part of one of the greatest stories ever told on film, and the catering wasn't bad either.

Kendrick Lamar Invites Salad Company CEO Onstage to Do "m.A.A.d city", Swiftly Kicks Him Off For Not Knowing the Song

Recently, Kendrick Lamar has been inviting fans on stage to help him perform "m.A.A.d city". Last night during his headlining spot at Sweetlife Festival, he invited a guy named Jonathan on stage to do the song. Shortly after they got started, Lamar stopped the song and had the guy escorted off the stage.

Turns out, "Jonathan" is Jonathan Neman, CEO and co-founder of Sweetgreen—the company behind the festival and the Lamar-themed salad "Beets Don't Kale My Vibe". Watch video below via Fader.

After Neman got shooed off the stage, a woman named Ayanna came up and crushed it.

Kanye West Gives Speech at Los Angeles Trade Technical College, Discusses Creativity, Fashion, Haters

Kanye West Gives Speech at Los Angeles Trade Technical College, Discusses Creativity, Fashion, Haters

Yesterday, Kanye West stopped by the Gold Thimble Fashion Show at Los Angeles Trade Technical College – where he once taught a course, as Complex points out – to address the fashion students. While the eight-minute speech was neither as formal nor as long as his lecture at Oxford earlier this year, 'Ye still found time to fit in plenty of wisdom regarding ambition, creativity, striving for excellence and fending off the haters. Check out the entire speech below via Hot New Hip Hop.

West's speech addressed the problems practically every artist faces in the workplace, no matter how talented:

It's a tough world out there. You've got to prepare yourself for politics, bad bosses, hating employees and usually when you're the absolute best, you get hated on the most. But never stop fighting, no matter what anyone says, no matter how they try to compromise your vision.

The artist also brought in his own experiences as a way to commiserate, as well as inspire:

I empathize with anyone in this era who's ever loved fashion. Usually, it's not like loving the idea of being a lawyer or becoming a doctor. When kids tell their parents that they want to be a fashion designer, it's usually not met with the same response as the traditional career choices. Even for me as a successful musician, in order to make the transition, it was really all but impossible. People always try to box you in for what they know you best for. The most successful artists are as close to as they were when they five years old, or four years old, or three years old, or when my daughter wakes up and decides to change her career seven times a day.

NXNE Moves Action Bronson Show Due to Controversy

NXNE Moves Action Bronson Show Due to Controversy

Action Bronson recently came under fire after a woman named Erica Shiner launched a Change.org petition to bar the New York rapper from performing at a NXNE festival event at Yonge-Dundas Square in Toronto on June 21. Her petition, which alleged that Bronson "glorifies gang-raping and murdering women," had been signed by over 1,600 supporters.

In spite of these criticisms, NXNE initially defended their decision to book Bronson and said, "Those who are offended by an artist are invited to check out other Festival showcases." Now, they've cancelled Bronson's free showcase and issued a new statement on the matter:

We at Northby Northeast (NXNE) are very proud of our 20 plus years relationship with the people of the City of Toronto. And for almost ten years we’ve shared Yonge-Dundas Square with you to present free, all ages shows open to the public. YDS is the city’s space and as such we are obliged to listen to how the city and community want it used. A significant number of Torontonians have indicated their desire to have Action Bronson not perform at the Square. As annual guests in this space we feel we must accede to the strong wishes of the community and honour their input.

As a result, we will not be presenting Action Bronson at Yonge-Dundas Square but, hopefully we will still be presenting Action Bronson as part of Northby. We remain fundamentally committed to presenting this artist on a Toronto stage. We are not moving the Action show because we believe in censoring him or any other artists. In fact, we find the limiting of artistic expression distasteful. When artistic expression is limited, freedom and the evolution of ideas is often the casualty.

Hopefully, Action Bronson will accept our invitation to play at another, ticketed venue in the city so the public can decide for themselves if his work has merit. We booked Bronson, in part, because of his latest excellent disc, Mr. Wonderful.

We hope that this series of events does not foster some type of artistic chill in Toronto and its public spaces. Yonge-Dundas Square must remain a dynamic place where many viewpoints are expressed not just culturally but also at political events and rallies staged there.

We are heartened by the community engagement that has been taking place around this YDS show. This debate continues an important conversation about violence against women and its depiction in art and culture that is long overdue. We salute all of those who fight this battle and we would encourage everyone who has signed the petition or been engaged by this conversation to commit themselves personally to continuing the fight against violence against women. We at Northby pledge to continue being part of this discussion with the intent to help act as agents of change.

Sincerely,

The Directors of North by Northeast

Joni Mitchell Reportedly Suffered Brain Aneurysm

Joni Mitchell Reportedly Suffered Brain Aneurysm

On March 31, Joni Mitchell was hospitalized.  TMZ later reported that the iconic singer/songwriter was in a coma and unresponsive – a diagnosis later refuted by her representatives. Today, sources close to Mitchell told Billboard the reason for her hospitalization: a brain aneurysm. She remains in "very serious" condition, and is expected to be moved to a rehab facility, the sources say.

Mitchell has requested conservatorship from her longtime friend, Leslie Morris. Despite a Billboard report at the beginning of the month suggesting Mitchell's imminent release from the hospital, sources say that she has not yet returned home, according to Billboard.

Water Company Challenges Jay Z's "Water Is Free" Tidal Comments

Water Company Challenges Jay Z's "Water Is Free" Tidal Comments

When Jay Z introduced Tidal back in March, he infamously said in a New York Times interview, "The challenge is to get everyone to respect music again, to recognize its value. Water is free. Music is $6, but no one wants to pay for music. You should drink free water from the tap — it’s a beautiful thing. And if you want to hear the most beautiful song, then support the artist."

Now, a water company is taking issue with that statement, as Billboard points out. Steve Snyder, an executive for Denver Water, has penned "An open letter to Jay Z" refuting his assertion that water is free. "Since water is my business, I have to say, “Stick to your own business, man!," he writes.

As Snyder explains, "Artists should be paid for the music they create. But to say that 'water is free while music is $6' isn’t exactly true."

He continues, "This isn’t meant to state the obvious fact that some people can’t pay their water bills, so water must not be free. But your comments bring up the issue of how people value water — an issue our industry struggles with all the time." To back up his argument, he approximates the amount of H2O one could glean from Hova's earnings; apparently, the money made from Magna Carta Holy Grail could buy 1 billion gallons (enough to fill 1600 Olympic-sized pools).

Snyder concludes his post by writing, "So perhaps we have something in common. You will continue your quest to help people understand the value of music, while people in my industry will do the same with water. Of course, I’ve heard you actually have a whole list of problems to address — 99 to be exact?" Read the blog post in full here.

Today, Denver Water issued a follow-up post, clarifying that "This is not about whether Jay Z thinks water is free. In fact, we commend him for speaking out about the water crisis in other countries. We understood his reference to water and music. He was talking about the value of the very thing that provides his livelihood. So were we."

A portion of the proceeds from each deck will help fund Glasgow Urban Sports' proposed skate park in Port Eglinton, Glasgow. It would be "an inclusive, aesthetically intriguing public space creatively designed with artists to encourage radical urban sports including skateboarding, BMX and free-running,” according to a press release. (You can check out an overview of the space here).

Julian Casablancas Teaches You About Politics, Makes You Bob Marley and Lou Reed Mixtapes

Are you looking for an introduction to the music of Lou Reed and Bob Marley? Have you ever pondered Julian Casablancas' opinions regarding the long-term effects of global capitalism? Wonder no more: the Strokes/Voidz frontman has relaunched his website to include two new sections: "Politics", in which Casablancas links to and comments on work by Martin Luther King Jr., Howard Zinn, Noam Chomsky, and the like, and "Master Mix Tapes", a collection of YouTube playlists to introduce fans to various artists' discographies.

Casablancas isn't looking to sow discord with the "Politics" section. "Regardless of your leanings, we find this information helpful in understanding our current world better," the page says. "If it’s not consistent with your opinions that’s fine, just sharing what we think is relevant and perhaps out of mainstream sight."

Meanwhile, the Master Mix Tapes is intended as a way to honor "just some the best of the best, universally cool super-champs, no big deal." So far, there are mixes of songs by Reed, Marley, and Stevie Wonder.

The New Pornographers Go to Cuba With "Champions of Red Wine" Video

The New Pornographers Go to Cuba With "Champions of Red Wine" Video

The New Pornographers have shared a visual for their Brill Bruisers single "Champions of Red Wine". Directorial team Cudmore + Leblanc filmed the entire video – which concerns a self-proclaimed "Prehistoric Man" who goes through an existential crisis in paradise – on location in Cuba. Check out the video below.

Scott Cudmore shared his interpretation of the video and its aloof main character:

Obviously there’s a debt to the Paris, Texas locale of peep shows here and that was sort of the jumping off point for the video. I had this idea of a rambling, drunk loner in a foreign environment - somebody who can’t really connect to anything except for on a very superficial level. All the interactions he has are forced, more like transactions than anything. It’s a portrait of this guy, a few hours, a couple of days, in his life as he flails wildly around - his only means of communication being physical. The video is a fragment of this character. We only know him in the moment, not where he comes from or where he is going.

Flume and Miike Snow's Andrew Wyatt Invade the Sydney Opera House for "Some Minds" Video

Flume and Miike Snow's Andrew Wyatt Invade the Sydney Opera House for "Some Minds" Video

Australian beatmaker Harley Streten, aka Flume, has released the video for "Some Minds", a new collaborative track featuring vocals and lyrics from Miike Snow's Andrew Wyatt. The clip, directed by Clemens Habicht, offers an eerie, inside look at the Sydney Opera House after hours. Shot over the span of a single night at the Australian landmark, it features cool and unsettling choreography by Australian Ballet member Callum Linnane. Watch the video below, via Pitchfork.tv.

"It was humbling to be able to make something in a building so iconic," Flume said in a press release. (He will perform at the Opera House tomorrow and Saturday as part of Future Classic's 10th anniversary celebration.)

"Some Minds" is released tomorrow via Mom & Pop in the U.S. and Future Classic in Australia.

Here's what Flume had to say about the new song:

I started the instrumental at my apartment in Sydney - first working with the drums and arrangement, then built chords around it, did some vocal bits as sketches before meeting up with Andrew Wyatt from Miike Snow in his studio in New York City. Andrew was writing things in his own head, singing ideas into his phone, I played the song over and over then after about an hour he jumped up and said 'stop' and launched into singing this amazing chorus melody. We recoded it then fleshed out the lyrics of the chorus and verses. I finished it off with the crazy ending further down the line, a few months later.

On the first album I had only worked remotely with singers sending files back and forth over the internet. I still enjoy working remotely but have also done a bunch of sessions with people in person. Sometimes its quite odd, even uncomfortable as you have never met, writing music is a very personal process for me. The session for "Some Minds" with Andrew was one of the most natural I've done. He is a seasoned pro and it really opened me up to this way of working.

I am pretty hard on myself when it comes to being satisfied with new material, I am always trying to push myself. 'Some Minds' is a song, not a track which is what I was trying to achieve with this one.

And the video:

The last four months has been the longest I've had at home in Sydney without being on the road touring and, while I love travelling, it's nice to come home to such a beautiful place like Sydney. It was humbling to be able to make something in a building so iconic. Being inside the Sydney Opera House filming overnight with no one in the building, it was quite eerie, the place has so much character. The director Clemens [Habicht] really nailed what I wanted to achieve in getting a balance between the real and synthetic, he has a great eye... Maybe it's a love letter to Sydney.

Willis Earl Beal Announces Noctunes, Shares "Flying So Low"

Willis Earl Beal Announces Noctunes, Shares "Flying So Low"

Willis Earl Beal's last album Experiments in Time was released last summer. One year later, he's releasing Noctunes. It's out August 28 via Tender Loving Empire. That's album cut "Flying So Low" above.

In a statement, Beal called the album intentionally minimalistic. "People had all these ideas about what I was supposed to be," he said. "I had only ever wanted to make lullabies. ... I wanted to create this persona that could say everything perfectly with very little. The record, to me, is a perfect record. I listen to that thing a lot, and it helps me."

Noctunes:

01 Under You
02 Flying So Low
03 Like a Box
04 Lust
05 No Solution
06 Stay
07 Say the Words
08 Love Is All Around
09 Able to Wait
10 Survive
11 Start Over
12 12 Midnight

Lil B Does the Cooking Dance at the Rockets-Warriors Playoff Game

Lil B Does the Cooking Dance at the Rockets-Warriors Playoff Game

Tonight, the Houston Rockets and Golden State Warriors faced off in the NBA playoffs. Both Kanye West and Lil B were in the building.

West didn't perform this time, instead enjoying the game from courtside. Lil B, however, did the cooking dance for ESPN. Watch it happen below via The Fader.

Perviously, Lil B called out James Harden of the Rockets for doing the cooking dance without giving the Based God proper credit. The curse was enacted. Tonight, the Rockets lost and the Golden State Warriors.

Tyler, the Creator spent some time on Twitter tonight looking back on the last five years of Odd Future. As Billboard points out, he seemed to imply that the collective is "no more."

Those seven letters he's referring to are likely OFWGKTA. It's unclear if his tweets indicate a full-on breakup or if he's reflecting on how they've drifted apart in recent months. Tyler and Earl Sweatshirt both released albums this year; Frank Ocean's got one on the way.
