The Los Angeles Times reports that Phil Everly, one-half of the Everly Brothers, died earlier today in Burbank, Calif. at the age of 74 of complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. His wife, Patty Everly, told the Times that the disease was the result of a lifetime of smoking cigarettes, adding, "We are absolutely heartbroken. He fought long and hard."Along with sibling Don, the Everly Brothers had nearly three dozen songs place on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart during the height of their popularity in the late 1950s and early '60s.
