The xx Issue Statement Against Song Used in Political Ad
Earlier today, the xx took to their Facebook to speak out about the Croatian political organization U ime obitelji using their song "Intro" in an advertisement that discourages same-sex marriage.
The statement makes it perfectly clear that they aren't happy about the organization's use of the song, stating that the band "unconditionally supports the equal right to marriage regardless of sexuality." Read the full statement below.
It has come to our attention that our music has been used without our permission in a promotional advert by the Croatian organisation "U ime obitelji". We wish to state that we didn't, and would never, approve the use of our music by this organisation. To be clear, we unconditionally support the equal right to marriage regardless of sexuality.

Ron Reyes Leaves Black Flag
Greg Ginn's recent attempt at reviving Black Flag—not to be confused with FLAG, a separate Black Flag revival—seems to have hit another setback. Ron Reyes, the group's current vocalist, took to Facebook to announce that he's leaving the reformed group, writing that "we fell very short indeed and the diminishing ticket sales and crowds are a testament to that." It's unclear what this means for the forthcoming release of What The..., which is out next month on SST but has already been posted online.
Read Reyes' full statement below, via his Facebook page:
On November 24th 2013 the last night of the Australian Hits and Pits tour with two songs left in the set Mike V comes on stage stares me down, takes my mic and says “You’re done, party’s over get off it’s over…” He said something else to me but it was a lie so I won’t repeat it here. So with a sense of great relief that it was finally over I left the stage and walked to the hotel room. They finished the set with Mike V on vocals. There is much more that can and perhaps should be said. But for now I will spare you the gory details.
The writing was on the wall since before we played our first show. So many things went wrong from the start. I was into things like having a good drummer, rehearsing and spending time on things like beginnings and endings of songs, being a little less distracted with tour life and a little more on the ball. You know things that would make our efforts worthy of the name Black Flag… Yes it is my opinion that we fell very short indeed and the diminishing ticket sales and crowds are a testament to that. However It was made clear to me that raising these issues was tantamount to a blasphemous stab in the back to Greg. How could I question him, his efforts and hard work? How could I dare be a fan of OFF! And or be friends and a fan of Flag? I was told that I had to chose sides. But I refuse to treat someone like an infallible Pope figure. No guitarist deserves such unquestioning blind devotion.
And so I have been excommunicated in a very strange fashion. I truly feel sorry for anyone who had to witness the infantile behavior and the relentless provocation I was subjected to both on and off the stage. I regret that under such fierce provocation and taunting I sometimes responded in manners bellow my standard. I am grateful for the opportunities Greg gave me. There were some magical moments at first. I was naive enough to believe in the promise of potential. But in the end the good was no match for the overwhelming bad. I am proud of my contributions including the new album and it’s cover. Come on folks it’s only rock n roll.
I would not be surprised if Mike V becomes the new singer for Black Flag. It is my opinion that they have been planing this for some time. I wish them well. Mike is a true disciple of Greg and so they have a good working relationship. And ironically the tension over the last weeks has brought out some of Greg’s best playing. So it could be interesting.
I will miss playing with Dave Klien. He is a great kid and truly an outstanding bass player. Dave was an anchor that kept me from losing my place on a nightly basis. Trust me that was no easy task for either of us. I truly apologize for being in or more accurately “appearing” to be in competition with “Flag”. They know my heart on this matter. From the beginning I was happy for them and fully supported and understood why they would want to rock those songs and have a good time with friends and family. Yes I questioned their use of the name and logo but in no way questioned their motivation or right to do their thing. I envy them for they have succeeded in ways that were never possible with “Black Flag”.
And once again for the record, I agreed to do Black Flag before I knew there was a Flag. I mean no malice towards Greg or Mike although they will most likely see things very differently. I wish them luck and prosperity. I have learned many valuable lessons this year. And these lessons will enrich my personal and musical endeavors. Cheers. Ron Reyes.

GoldieBlox Writes Open Letter to Beastie Boys, Removes "Girls" Parody from Ad
The war between the Beastie Boys and toy company GoldieBlox over the use of "Girls" in a video advertisement promoting the latter's toys entered its open letter phase this week, and a new O.L. from GoldieBlox suggests that the litigious dispute is coming to an end.
In a statement posted to GoldieBlox's website, the company says it's removed the song from the offending advertisement in question, and as of now it actually looks like the video has been taken down. The statement also notes that "we are ready to stop the lawsuit as long as this means we will no longer be under threat from your legal team." They also address the reasons why they first filed a suit against the Beasties and apologize for the incident in general; the full statement is below.
Dear Adam and Mike,
We don’t want to fight with you. We love you and we are actually huge fans.
When we made our parody version of your song, ‘Girls’, we did it with the best of intentions. We wanted to take a song we weren’t too proud of, and transform it into a powerful anthem for girls. Over the past week, parents have sent us pictures and videos of their kids singing the new lyrics with pride, building their own Rube Goldberg machines in their living rooms and declaring an interest in engineering. It’s been incredible to watch.
Our hearts sank last week when your lawyers called us with threats that we took very seriously. As a small company, we had no choice but to stand up for ourselves. We did so sincerely hoping we could come to a peaceful settlement with you.
We want you to know that when we posted the video, we were completely unaware that the late, great Adam Yauch had requested in his will that the Beastie Boys songs never be used in advertising. Although we believe our parody video falls under fair use, we would like to respect his wishes and yours.
Since actions speak louder than words, we have already removed the song from our video. In addition, we are ready to stop the lawsuit as long as this means we will no longer be under threat from your legal team.
We don’t want to spend our time fighting legal battles. We want to inspire the next generation. We want to be good role models. And we want to be your friends.
Sincerely,
Debbie + Team GoldieBlox

Watch Bonnie "Prince" Billy Perform New Version of "Black Captain", Written for Greenpeace Captain
Will Oldham is one of the many supporters of Peter Willcox, the captain of the Greenpeace ship that was seized by Russia's Federal Security Service this fall following peaceful protests of an offshore oil rig. Oldham has made a new version of his song "Black Captain" from Wolfroy Goes to Town in support of Willcox.
Willcox, who was originally charged with piracy (and later, "hooliganism"), was recently granted bail and released from detainment, but is being held in Russia before his trial in February.
Read the new lyrics to the song below, followed by footage of Oldham performing the new version.
"Black Captain (For Peter Willcox)":
When he’d disappeared into hazard I’d feared
I was now meant to sail on my own
There is a place on the open sea
You will say it is like any other
It has an air of importance to me
As it waits for the hull of my brother
It had been my thought that the power he got
Couldn’t be there without what I gave him
And now I find a good part of my mind
Will be worthless unless I help save him
He ain’t here ain’t here
I can’t handle this lack
And now
I
Want my captain back

Blood Orange's Dev Hynes Weighs in on Jay Z's Partnership With Barneys
Friends: "The Way" (Blood Orange remix) on SoundCloud.
Dev Hynes, better known to many as Blood Orange, had an eventful Sunday evening on Twitter that included a screed about Jay Z's much-discussed partnership with Barneys in the wake of the store's racial-profiling controversy. He would've liked to see Jay sever ties with the department store, he writes:
"The biggest 'Fuck You' in history could have been Jay-Z saying NO to Barneys. I'm a big fan [of Jay], of course, who isn't? But just looking at it from the perspective of someone that has had racial abuse in my life. It's cool that all proceeds are going to charity, that's great! But now Barneys, an already rich company that could be charitable anyway... get a cosign and an easy route to redeeming their name. None of the parties involved need more money. They NEED less."
The comments, albeit gently worded, seem bold in light of Hynes' collaborative history with Jay's sister-in-law Solange.
In other Hynes news, he's posted his remix of the Friends song "The Way"—stream it above.

DJ Koze Scores Play That Takes Place Inside a Moving Car, for an Audience of Three
Stefan Kozalla, aka DJ Koze, will follow up this year's excellent Amygdala with something much more left-of-center. FACT points to Kozalla's Facebook post explaining that his music will appear in a highly unconventional German play that takes place in a moving vehicle with two actors in the front seats.
"I made a Soundtrack containing some unreleased Music from me for a new play from the Schauspielhaus Stuttgart," he writes. "The play takes place in a car! It's only for an audience of 3 Passengers per night—very special." The above photo is taken from Schauspiel Stuttgart's website, where more info about the play can be found.

Watch Another Video for the James Murphy Remix of David Bowie's "Love Is Lost"
James Murphy's 10-minute remix of David Bowie's "Love Is Lost" is the type of event song that apparently requires two separate music videos. In addition to the original video Bowie and friends whipped up on a $13 budget, Vice has another official video shot by Barnaby Roper. Whereas the first video was made for only a portion of the song, this one is the full 10-minute shebang. In the clip, a digital sketch of two lovers comes to life, so it's not entirely safe for work. Watch it here.
